"Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was an English mechanical and civil engineer who built dockyards, the Great Western Railway, a series of steamships including the first propeller-driven transatlantic steamship and numerous important bridges and tunnels. His designs revolutionised public transport and modern engineering."

The last section of I-70 built. The delay was because of the controversy over whether they could build a freeway through this beautiful canyon without destroying it. US HIghway 6 had always gone through here, but it was a simple two lane road that easily and gently hugged the edge of the Colorado River.

As you can see, they did a fabulous job with the freeway. They were generous with bridges and tunnels so as to not disturb much of the natural terrain. I am most grateful that this canyon remains accessible to the masses as they drive across the state and the country.

Thanks, Colorado Division of Highways.

On 14th Oct 2018, 10000 Hong Kong protesters hold a rally from Causeway Bay to the Central Office, to protest the government 's plan to spend probably 1 trillion Hong Kong dollars to build artificial islands and accompanying bridges and tunnels in the East of Lantau Island.

The former "East Lantau Metropolis project" proposed to reclaim 1000 hectares , has been replaced this week by an even more ambitious project of "Lantau Tomorrow Vision " of reclaiming 1700 hectares to house 1.1million people by the Chief Executive Carrie Lam, preempting the awaited public consultation report by the Task Force on Land Supply.

The protestors worried the project has not considered the risks under extreme weather, will irreversibly damage the environment, burn up the whole fiscal reserve, and deprive the public of the funding for other more important fields like medical , education, and retirement scheme.

Moreover the project , requiring 2 to 3 decades to complete , cannot cater for the immediate housing needs of the general public, as compared to other source of land supply such as the Fanling Golf Course , brownfield sites and buy back farmland from private estate developers for public housing.

The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge consists of a series of bridges and tunnels that connect Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai, three major cities on the Pearl River Delta in China.

Sydney Gardens, Bath.

Sydney House, 1835-36.

Probably by John Pinch the Younger (1796-1849).

Grade ll listed.

Sydney Gardens were laid out as commercial pleasure grounds between 1792 and 1794; the initial design was by the architect Thomas Baldwin, who, after he went bankrupt, was replaced by Charles Harcourt Masters in 1794. They were opened on 11 May 1795 as Sydney Gardens Vauxhall, and rapidly became a popular place of entertainment, hosting public breakfasts, promenades and galas. The main building was the Sydney Tavern, which stood at the western end of the central walk, and housed tea and card rooms, a ballroom, coffee room and a public house. In 1799, a section of the Kennet & Avon Canal was cut through the gardens, with the addition of decorative bridges and tunnels, which added to the picturesque appeal of the pleasure grounds; these were insisted upon by the proprietors of Sydney Gardens as part of their agreement with the canal company, which was entered into in 1795. The canal company paid £2,100 and the cost of providing the bridges and tunnels as compensation for the intrusion into the gardens. During the early C19, additional features and structures were introduced, adding variety and surprise in accordance with landscape design principles of the period. From c1839, a section of the Great Western Railway was constructed, cutting through the gardens. Later in the C19, further ornamental structures were introduced, but these were largely cleared away after World War Two. In 1891, when the original 99-year lease of the Gardens expired, the entire site, including the Tavern, by then in use as a college, was sold, with the intention of replacing the former Tavern with a large hotel, and remodelling the grounds. The plan was abandoned and in 1908, the site was purchased by Bath City Council; the gardens were opened to the public as a municipal park in 1913, while the Tavern was remodelled by Sir Reginald Blomfield into the Holburne of Menstrie Museum. The gardens remain in use as a public park.

Oh dear Lord, I actually acquired one! American Bank Note engravers master plate - #81538 - for the 50 cent Toll Scrip note for the New York City Tunnel Authority - the original operator of Queens Midtown Tunnel, as constructed and opened in 1940; and of which was acquired by the Triborough Bridge Authority in 1946, and requiring their name to be changed to the Triborough Bridge *and Tunnel* Authority.

There are four other plates (denominations) known to exist: 25 cent, 40 cent, 60 cent and 75 cent.

The original owner / gallery was asking $10,000 for the set for many years. I contacted them in 2019 with an offer of $2,500 ($500 per plate), but I never heard back.

About a two years after that, I found out the set was broken up and listed on eBay several months prior, and where I found that a few plates fetched way less than that of my offer.

I never saw the auctions so I couldn't even be competitive in bidding. I was to say the least, very disappointed.

Lapse forward to a few months ago, when the owner of the 50 cent plate emailed me (after finding my website on toll scrip of New York & New Jersey:

members.trainweb.com/bedt/toll/nytollscripandtokenspage3....

if I had ever seen a corresponding issued scrip for the plate, which I had not. Only one circulated 25 cent note is known to exist. He is a primarily a collector of engraving plates and banknotes of his country, but also collects other unique printing plates items which is how he ended up acquiring this. I said if he ever considered parting with the plate, give me a holler.

Last week, he did. Since he did not want to ship the plate from his country of residence, he carried the plate with him on a commercial flight to visit family in Florida, and then mailed it to me via UPS upon arrival. Four days later it has now been delivered into my hot little hands!

After ogling it for 30 minutes, and taking a cell phone shot of it; I went to work with some paper towel and rubbing alcohol, and it cleaned up nicely. I think it was coated with beeswax for storage by American Bank Note Company, and it has not been cleaned since, as photos from the auction show the same dirt, and some paper stuck to it. Some very minor pitting from age, but she really cleaned up nicely - almost to a mirror shine.

It will be sent shortly to George Cuhaj, who has at his disposal a intaglio press, where we will make proofs for me (and himself), and then I will recoat it with a preventative. I think I will have it mounted and framed with one of the printed proofs.

Here's the rub: no surviving notes are known so we do not know what color ink it was printed with! The 25 cent was printed dark purple. Was each denomination a different color, or the same - we won't know until a printed example or a printers proof surfaces.

Siderography:

To give a quick understanding of this plate: the toll scrip were not printed from this. This is the master. And engraver did his work on a piece of soft steel. When finished and approved, it went into an oven, and quenched hardening the plate.

Then a cylindrical piece of steel (soft) was rolled across the top of the master under very high pressure, making for a positive, this is called a transfer roll.

Then that "transfer roll" cylinder was hardened.

Then the hardened positive cylinder is rolled back and forth dozens of times under high pressure on a flat plate of soft steel. . This makes for a multiple impression negative printing plate.

This was then installed in a printing press, and then sheets of paper were printed from that, cut and used for currency, note, stock or what have you. Here is a great video of the process, which is called Siderography:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Slwn2nDZNtE

In high quantity production, the negative printing plates would be sacrificial; and in the case of say US Banknotes, many dozens or hundreds of plates would be made from the transfer roll.

When the transfer roll was worn out, a new one would be made from the master.

If and when the master plate wore out, a new one needed to be engraved. Slight differences in the master plate allowed for differences in production.

On something like this toll scrip, one master and one transfer roll were in all likelihood, the only ones. with the plates destroyed after use, and the master and the transfer rolls going into company archives.

In the case of American Bank Note Co, they made postage stamps, banknotes, coupons, scrip, stock and bond certificates, even cigar bands; and other engraved printed items.

When they liquidated their archives in 2006, someone was smart enough to offer up for auction through Stacks Bowers; which is how this plate and others survived.

The Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge in New York City, spanning the East River between the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Opened on May 24, 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge was the first fixed crossing across the East River. It was also the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time of its opening, with a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m) and a deck located 127 ft (38.7 m) above mean high water. The span was originally called the New York and Brooklyn Bridge or the East River Bridge but was officially renamed the Brooklyn Bridge in 1915.

Proposals for a bridge connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn were first made in the early 19th century, which eventually led to the construction of the current span, designed by John A. Roebling. His son Washington Roebling oversaw the construction and contributed further design work, assisted by the latter's wife, Emily Warren Roebling. While construction started in 1870, numerous controversies and the novelty of the designed construction process caused the actual construction to be prolonged over thirteen years. Since opening, the Brooklyn Bridge has undergone several reconfigurations, having carried horse-drawn vehicles and elevated railway lines until 1950. To alleviate increasing traffic flows, additional bridges and tunnels were built across the East River. Following gradual deterioration, the Brooklyn Bridge has been renovated several times, including in the 1950s, 1980s, and 2010s.

The Brooklyn Bridge is the southernmost of four toll-free vehicular bridges connecting Manhattan Island and Long Island, with the Manhattan, Williamsburg, and Queensboro bridges to the north. Only passenger vehicles and pedestrian and bicycle traffic are permitted. A major tourist attraction since its opening, the Brooklyn Bridge has become an icon of New York City. Over the years, the bridge has been used as the location of various stunts and performances, as well as several crimes and attacks. The Brooklyn Bridge has been designated a National Historic Landmark, a New York City landmark, and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

A shot from the impressive model railroad set up currently in Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha. All the buildings, bridges and tunnels (etc.) are building of natural wood, with bark still attached, giving this an odd "naturalistic" feel mixed with the technology of the trains. It's a very strange addition to the Gardens, but interesting nevertheless.

Through 25 joint enforcement operations focusing on ghost plates and persistent toll violators on bridges and in tunnels throughout New York City, MTA Bridge and Tunnel officers, NYPD officers and local law enforcement partners have impounded 1,540 vehicles, made 339 arrests and issued 12,007 summonses. These drivers owe more than $12.5 million in unpaid tolls and fees.

The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge is an ongoing construction project which consists of a series of bridges and tunnels crossing the Lingdingyang channel that will connect Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai, three major cities on the Pearl River Delta in China. The proposed 50 kilometres (31 miles) link is expected to cost US$10.6 billion (HK$83 billion). With its length, it would become one of the landmarks within the area. The longest bridge section will be 29.6 kilometres (18.4 mi) long and will include three cable-stayed spans between 280 and 460 metres (920 and 1,510 ft). Construction formally began on 15 December 2009.

The tunnel mouth was hemmed in next to the bridge, that carried Leeds Road over the railway.

The semi circular, grey coloured area, on top of the tunnel was inaccessible and so no-one is exactly certain that this is how it looked, or exactly why the bricks on top were built as a curved wall (like half a tunnel vent) This area is of great interest to me, as I can remember walking down Leeds Road after the road bridge sides had been removed, the cutting was filled in and you could actually see inside the tunnel, which had been filled in leaving a space under the roof.

In this view, you can see the shunting signal that was on the wall between the bridge and tunnel.

Old Elbe Tunnel or St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel (Alter Elbtunnel colloquially or St. Pauli Elbtunnel officially) which opened in 1911, is a pedestrian and vehicle tunnel in Hamburg, Germany. The 426 m long tunnel was a technical sensation; 24 m beneath the surface, two 6 m diameter tubes connect central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards on the south side of the river Elbe. This was a big improvement for tens of thousands of workers in one of the busiest harbors in the world.

Four large lifts on either side of the tunnel carry pedestrians and vehicles to the bottom. The two tunnels are both still in operation, though due to their limited capacity by today's standards, other bridges and tunnels have been built and taken over most of the traffic.

In 2008 approximately 300,000 cars, 63,000 bicycles, and 700,000 pedestrians used the tunnel. The tunnel is opened 24 hours for pedestrians and bicycles. For motorized vehicles, opening times are currently Monday to Friday from 5:20 AM to 8:00 PM and on Saturdays from 5:20 AM to 4:00 PM. Source: en.wikipedia.org

Ilha da Madeira -

The ER101 leads all the way in one big circle around Madeira.

It is the oldest and most beautiful road of the island. Due to Madeira' s dramatic coast line, the road has many curves, narrow passages and steep climbs and descents.

Many parts of the road have been renewed with bridges and tunnels, allowing most of the island to be in accaptable reach from Funchal. The old ER101 however remains in good condition and is still accessible. Due to the many views on the coast and the Atlantic, this is absolutely the road to be taken by tourists.

Art Wall on Third Exhibition

The Art Collection, 3rd floor

Mid-Manhattan Library

The Art and Picture Collections at Mid-Manhattan Library present Storylights a three-part site-specific exhibition featuring the work of artist Katherine Jackson. The exhibition title conveys the dual nature of libraries: physical structures ("stories") housing the most intangible realities and the endlessly proliferating "stories" that humankind tells itself. Storylights consists of edge-lit or back lit etched glass sculptures and preparatory drawings for the glass pieces. The new work includes large scale abstract images inspired by architectural elements of Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on 5th Avenue and 42nd Street. These combine with previously made text-based work -- which tell or hint at stories -- along with images of bridges (most notably, the Manhattan Bridge). All are lit with LEDs or fluorescent lights. The effect is to suggest the bringing together (“bridging”) of the luminous world of the imagination and the outer world of steel, stone and light.

Artist and 2011 Guggenheim Fellow Katherine Bardford joins Jackson for An Artist Dialogue on December 17 at 2:30 p.m. in the Corner Room on the 1st floor.

Storylights, pt. 1 exhibition, on view through January 3, 2012, is held inside the reading room on the first floor
