URBAN ART MURALISM - ARTIST EXCHANGE in AMSTERDAM
A group of 36 Urban Artists coming from six European countries – Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Italy, France and Austria – took part in the European Art Exchange Project “SH(OUT)!!!” from 18.03.11 to 27.03.11 in Amsterdam.
The main activities included several mural paintings in the city of Amsterdam, an exhibition in the Dokhuis Gallery as well as a common art workshop with local young people.
Nowadays Urban Art has worldwide acceptance as a young art form. Urban Artists form and transform public spaces and present their work, free of charge, throughout the cities. The event gives respect and pays tribute to art from the streets and makes this art form more accessible to a broader audience through various live painting activities in the city, two innovative group exhibitions and workshops.

A very chic Ian Schrager hotel in San Francisco. Not my favorite San Francisco hotel, it's a bit too crowded with the Bridge and Tunnel crowd having drinks at the Rainbow Room (a bar made entirely of redwood, and a San Francisco institution). I'd rather stay at the Hotel Vitale or the new St. Regis.
However, I just love this little interior tableau when you get off the elevators at The Clift. It's so glitzy, so noir. If I ever get new photos for my website, I'm going to do a shoot there.
Old Elbe Tunnel or St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel (German: Alter Elbtunnel (coll.) or St. Pauli Elbtunnel (official name)) which opened in 1911, is a pedestrian and vehicle tunnel in Hamburg, Germany. The 426 m (1,398 ft) long tunnel was a technical sensation; 24 m (80 ft) beneath the surface, two tubes with 6 m (20 ft) diameter connect central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards on the south side of the river Elbe. This meant a big improvement for tens of thousands of workers in one of the busiest harbours in the world.
Four huge lifts on either side of the tunnel carried pedestrians, carriages and motor vehicles to the bottom. They are still in operation, though due to the limited capacity by today's standards, other bridges and tunnels have been built and taken over most of the traffic.
In 2008 approx 300.000 cars, 63.000 bicycles and 700.000 pedestrians used the tunnel. The tunnel is opened 24 hours for pedestrians and bicycles. For motorized vehicles opening times are currently Monday to Friday from 5.20 AM to 8.00 PM, on Saturdays from 5.20 AM to 4.00 PM.

This album is dedicated to my father. Dad graduated from City University, London where he obtained a degree in BEng-Civil Engineering. Before WWII he worked for the City of London Corporation in the Engineering and Maintenance Department. After a few years he became a Supervising Engineer in the Bridges and Tunnels Section. He joined the Royal Engineers at the beginning of WWII as a Lieutenant and was a Captain when he left service at the end of the war.
He then went to work for the Royal Navy as a civilian engineer and worked at the Portland Dockyard in Dorset. He held various positions including Deputy Manager, Engineering Department until his untimely death in 1954. His job took him to Hong Kong a few times but I don't know for what purpose.

On 14th Oct 2018, 10000 Hong Kong protesters hold a rally from Causeway Bay to the Central Office, to protest the government 's plan to spend probably 1 trillion Hong Kong dollars to build artificial islands and accompanying bridges and tunnels in the East of Lantau Island.
The former "East Lantau Metropolis project" proposed to reclaim 1000 hectares , has been replaced this week by an even more ambitious project of "Lantau Tomorrow Vision " of reclaiming 1700 hectares to house 1.1million people by the Chief Executive Carrie Lam, preempting the awaited public consultation report by the Task Force on Land Supply.
The protestors worried the project has not considered the risks under extreme weather, will irreversibly damage the environment, burn up the whole fiscal reserve, and deprive the public of the funding for other more important fields like medical , education, and retirement scheme.
Moreover the project , requiring 2 to 3 decades to complete , cannot cater for the immediate housing needs of the general public, as compared to other source of land supply such as the Fanling Golf Course , brownfield sites and buy back farmland from private estate developers for public housing.

Heading East back to London; the train is just about to go on to the Royal Albert Bridge.
The Royal Albert Bridge (sometimes called the Brunel Bridge or Saltash Bridge) spans the River Tamar in the U.K. between Plymouth, on the Devon bank, and Saltash on the Cornish bank. It carries the Cornish Main Line in and out of Cornwall.
A short distance to the north of Brunel's bridge, the Tamar is crossed by the Tamar Bridge carrying the A38, one of the two trunk roads connecting Cornwall to Devon.
The bridge was designed in 1855 by Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the Cornwall Railway Company after Parliament rejected his original plan for a train ferry across the Hamoaze. The bridge consists of two main spans of 455 feet (139 m), 100 feet (30 m) above mean high spring tide, plus seventeen much shorter approach spans. Opened by Prince Albert on 2 May 1859, it was completed in the year of the great engineer's death.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel, FRS (9 April 1806 – 15 September 1859) (pronounced /ˈɪzəmbɑrd ˈkɪŋdəm brʊˈnɛl/), was a British engineer. He is best known for the creation of the Great Western Railway, a series of famous steamships, and numerous important bridges and tunnels, hence revolutionising public transport and modern day engineering.
A shot from the impressive model railroad set up currently in Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha. All the buildings, bridges and tunnels (etc.) are building of natural wood, with bark still attached, giving this an odd "naturalistic" feel mixed with the technology of the trains. It's a very strange addition to the Gardens, but interesting nevertheless.

The tunnel was first envisioned in 1903 as a more direct connection to the old Union Station, in the center of Providence. Construction on the tunnel started in May 1906. The tunnel was opened on November 15, 1908. The ownership of the tunnel was transferred to the state of Rhode Island in 1981. The last train passed through shortly after that. Robert Moses' acclaimed biographer Robert Caro called this bridge " a supreme example of building a huge public work in a democracy." Stroll two spans and two boroughs of the RFK Memorial Bridge, formerly known as the Triborough - so named for the three distinct bridges that united a city and transformed Queens. Tour guides Richard Melnick, trustee and former president of the greater Astoria Historical Society and MTA Bridges and Tunnels Archivist Mary Hedge explored the rich history of the city's first major span built exclusively for the automobile.

This 1957 model, made by Lester Associates, was installed in the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel headquarters during the planning of the bridge. It was modified as the route of the approach roads changed.
This move was managed by WelPak Corp. & TK Fine Arts Services. See the model today in the new Transit Museum exhibition, Spanning the Narrows: The Verrazano Bridge at 50.
My GrandDad picked up this magnificent piece of engineering in miniature from (then West)Germany in 1958.
It has survived an uncountable number of inquisitive and eager little hands which (quite understandably) never tired of its novelty and charm.
It runs on 12V DC (The power adaptor works to this day. It has a knob for speed control and a polarity reversing switch for direction change) fed to the tracks and picked by 2 spring loaded contacts on the underside.
The motor is an open coil surrounded by magnets which drives a worm and wheel (explains the amazing torque!).
The only thing that's plastic is the outer shell.
There are 2 small lights in front (minuscule incandescent bulbs, no more than 3 mm in diameter. LED's were unheard of in those days) The faster the train goes, the brighter they become.
The motor hums in a way that makes it sound like the faint horn of an actual locomotive. Intentional or not, it really adds to its charm.
Brings back memories of summer holidays spent with the track set up on the floor on a carpet, miniature houses and railway crossings, miniature advertising billboards along the track (Yes. I actually drew my own billboards on pieces of cardboard and propped them up using broomsticks.I was actually jobless enough to do something like that-a long time ago) and bridges and tunnels made of cardboard shoe boxes...
and of course, the hotwheels cars crossing the tracks just in the nick of time :)
ChongMing island, the "third largest" in China* is a sparsley-populated strip of land in the center of the Yangstze river, about an hour away from downtown Shanghai, thanks to a new bridge-and-tunnel combo.
The "vacation paradise" the tourist literature describes is nowhere to be found, nor are the majestic flocks of birds depicted on the large, fading billboards outside of the Wetland Park.
Not much to see here, honestly, but the tourists still came in droves, probably scaring off any wildlife that might have been around....
So, it's sad in a way, and not a great destination, but there is something amazing about looking out to the horizon and seeing nothing but reeds without a single apartment tower or power station to spoil the view. How many spots in China can compete with that?
*according to the Chinese gov't-issued tourist information. According to Wikipedia, it's only the second largest, and here's why.

The Chain Bridge in Budapest is, so our guide told us, a copy of the bridge on the River Thames at Marlow in Buckinghamshire.
PVB tour day 4. Part of Prague, Vienna & Budapest.
A view of the traffic queuing for the toll booths to head into the Cross Harbour Tunnel on the Kowloon side. To the left is part of the bus stops towards HK - only a few routes stop at these stops, others are to the left. Buses use the "auto toll" lanes so don't have to queue up to pay - this applies at all of the tolled bridge and tunnel crossings in Hong Kong.
On the right you can see the Kowloon bound stops with just a few buses in view - 10 if I am not mistaken!
