Ice sculptured figure coming out of the box. The annual Bloor-Yorkville IceFest sees a series of ice sculptures set-up around the area. Sponsored by local businesses the sculptures sit atop branded plinths and are fashioned after many themes, such as well known monuments, shoes, figures, or simply corporate logos.
At the start of the morning there are simply plinths with cardboard boxes beside them holding the slab of ice that the carver will start to work on with their chain saws and other implements. It quickly draws a crowd, most of whom seem to wield cameras, including yours truly. It's fun to watch the shapes start to form from such a course tool, and the noise and thrown chippings excites the children. Even if the cold temperatures persist the persistent touches of child and adult results in toppled figures by the following day.

I am glad this box jellyfish was in a tank. I would hate to tangle with it in the sea.

I was recently commissioned through etsy to create an altered cigar box for a 14 year old girl. I sent out my standard questionnaire but fount that the response didn't help me much. What I learned: she loves soccer, vintage, her dog, her brother and jesus. She also likes green and purple. She did add that she has big blue eyes and brown hair. I decided that rather than take all this info and try to squeeze it onto a box I would instead use her her colors and start with the theme of of coming of age. If I could get some of her other likes in there all the better. I figured that her parents chose to purchase this box from me for a reason so I went with my instinct. Here is the result.
There is a live monarch in that box. Slip the elastic, lift the lid, and wait for it to fly away to Mexico. Most monarchs only live 2-3 weeks, but every year during late summer a generation hatches that can survive up to eight months, allowing them to migrate down to Mexico, wait out the winter, and then start to head back. They won't make it back. They start mating again in the spring in places like Texas, and their kids will only live 2-3 weeks, flying north the whole time. Eventually they get to Canada and the cycle starts over again. The whole point of the tagging and Monarch Watch is to figure out how they do it.

unfortunately I got some vibrations at the top of the box, so I could not turn a thinner wall
Each year, Gallery Route One in Point Reyes invites over a hundred artists to create unique works of art using a wooden box.
Here are the inspiring artworks they created this year: they range in style from whimsical to poignant and thought-provoking. These photos were taken on closing day, when the gallery organized a live auction for each of this year’s 150 boxes. The proceeds support the gallery’s exhibits and community programs.
Two of the boxes were created by members of our art community: Howard Rheingold (a.k.a. Dr. Rindbrain) contributed an illuminated box called ‘Magical’, while Geo Monley and Meryl Rubenstein made ‘Les Puzzles.’
Members of ‘Pataphysical Studios came to cheer for their peers -- Dr. Really was the highest bidder for Dr. Rindbrain’s piece, which was thus kept in the family. After the show, we all went to Stellina to celebrate over a nice dinner.

This is Clifty Creek in the fall. Further up the creek is what we used to call the "Pepper Box", a grand place for young adventurous teenage boys to camp and party the night away! Great fun, and better memories!
This section should, by all rights, be a "wilderness pocket" protected by the State of Tennessee, and for all to enjoy.
The area is off Riggs Chapel Road near Harriman, Tennessee.
