«Mamsell Iversen», German translation of a slightly sinister and slightly burlesque novel by young Norwegian writer, Sigmund Løvåsen. 128 pages, hardcover, published in March 2011 by Verlag Martin Wallimann, Switzerland.
Seen here is the inside title page, title set in Hrant Papazian's Harrier typeface, smaller bits using Evert Bloemsma's FF Balance.
Picturia Press was contacted by the wonderful photographer, Kevin Stallard, to design his coffee table book, My Sierra A Personal Perspective. Mr. Stallard has been photographings the Sierra Mountains over a period of many years, capturing different perspectives of the Sierra over the different seasons. He has always desired to create a coffee table book showcasing some of his stunning images and we are thrilled we could work with him on this project.

Varanasi, City of Light - City of Shiva consists of two separate, yet equally compelling sets of images taken during our client's travels through India. The first section of this book, are images of Varanasi, also known as Banaras, or kashi, “the City of Light”, that was founded by Shiva. There are over 2,000 temples and shrines, but it is a city dedicated to Shiva. Varanasi, on the Ganges, the most holiest of rivers, is one of the most sacred pilgrimages for the Hindus. The latter section of this book showcases images of the beautiful and majestic Taj Mahal.

Book designer Giles of Osprey Design posted this cover design, which he calls "woeful". I sort of admire the 2-dimensionality, but it certainly has serious composition problems.
As an experiment, I tried to introduce some distinctions between author/title/etc and to tinker with the balance of figure to ground. The changes are headed in a direction that fundamentally undermines some of the quirkiness of the original while clearing up some of the problems. I wouldn't call it the "right" direction. And if it were, I haven't taken it far enough yet.
The version posted here, which I assume to be the final design, takes a different tack, of lightening the background to help the text stand out. I think that version went in absolutely the right direction and is much better than my experiment.
