kusa awase is a sort of game popular among the aristocrats in Heian era(9th century). they bring along various plants and compare eachother to vie the winner. the idea of the game is reflected into the design of this book.
for this facsimile edition, glossy transparent ink and silk screen technique were used to recreate the surface of Japanese lacquer, which had been used to print the black part of the original binding. to use lacquer in printing was the designer Hashiguchi's idea. this was rare and thought to be very inovative idea then(and today).
