I was milling around with a few other folks watching the activity at the river crossing late this afternoon. The action was pretty intense about now. There were horses in the trees behind me, bands of horses across the river, in the river, down the river. There was a lot going on and it was tough to decide what to focus on. Someone nearby said something like, "uh oh, trouble coming, look out behind you". I whirled around and pointed the camera, just in time to watch the chestnut body-slam and then kick at the gray. Geez.
Looking at the gray now, and the Righty gray in my post from yesterday, it's conceivable it's the same horse as this image is about 20 minutes before the gray pair posted yesterday. If that's so, then in the image from yesterday Lefty could be saying to Righty "Good job, you held your own against that rambunctious body-slammer." Furthermore, I'm elated I got any pics at all of this - straight into the setting sun practically. Lucky camera settings...

A sleek bodied animal with lustrous chocolate brown to black fur with white spottings on the chin and throat. They have a long and somewhat bushy tail. Male is larger than the female. They weigh between 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 pounds.
They inhabit areas along rivers, creeks, lakes, ponds and marshes.
They range from most of the US and Canada except for the southwestern US areas of southern California, southern and central Utah, souther New Mexico and western Texas.

I fondly remember that winter, even though getting to that dreamy place was quite a challenge. It snowed continuously throughout the night, and by morning there was about 60 cm of fresh snow covering the Swiss mountains. I was the first person that morning to walk through and admire this beautiful winter landscape. It was an experience that deeply impressed me and that I will never forget. It was truly beautiful to be in that spot, but getting there through the deep snow was so exhausting. Despite the icy cold, my whole body was pounding, and I quickly became so tired that I soon couldn't walk any further and had to turn back. But the experience of walking through that freshly snow-covered winter landscape was simply wonderful.
Fresh snow covers the fields, only silence, far and wide and in a moment I feel eternity.
This song holds such a powerful message for those suffering from mental illness. Because these are usually the kindest, sweetest and truest among us. They are gifted, many artfully or musically and their works are an expression of the love they hold inside. Like Vincent they too struggle to live in this tough world. Please remember to be kind.

This female determined by the tan and black tail matching the body colors is scampering across a bed of pine needles on a rock outcropping. She is at a guess 8 - 9 inches long so has probably hatched a clutch of eggs this past spring that she will have brooded in a nest in a rotting log or one she dug under cover where she would be protected. She would keep the eggs warm with her body heat and when she cooled would go out into the sun and get warmed prior to returning to the nest.
They feed on a diet of invertebrates like flies, spiders and crickets and keep a constant lookout for small mammals, snakes, birds and raccoons so they don't become prey themselves.
Following on the positive response to my Wave Warrior photos, my theme for today is a single body boarder. Quite often when I take shots of people in the surf, I will select a few good surfers and follow them as they ride the waves.
This young man was particularly good, here is a sequence of shots from when I saw him catch a wave, until it dropped him.
