... hard to believe it is here already this week ... seems like I just took this photo at the 4th of July yesterday ... but Turkey Day is about here. Where does the time fly?
I went for a walk from the canal bridge at All Cannings up to the Rybury Hill Fort and back, mainly for exercise, but I took the camera and tripod with me anyway. The light was magnificent as sunset approached and then passed.
I never took the tripod out, as the pan-and-tilt head on the Manfrotto I’ve just bought (to replace a Velbon that fell to bits) is very fiddly to set up. But on the way down, walking on one of our wonderful ancient public footpaths across an out-of-season corn field that’s backed by glacial hills like a Roman amphitheatre, I talked myself into taking one final series of shots. And I was glad I did!
Somehow I'm rarely happier than when taking photos in a field with just the very last of the late twilight left.

[EN] Shining clouds - a phenomenon in the upper part of the atmosphere (80-85km) is visible at dusk or dawn. It consists of crystals of frozen water. It can usually be observed in the summer months at a latitude between 50° and 70° north or south of the equator.
The gate was built between 1380 and 1425 as part of the second city wall. The whole wall was completed around 1450. The gate was attacked in 1427 during the siege of the city. This attack was repelled.
The gate was opened and closed every day by the appointed raddraaiers, "wheel-turners". A minimum of twelve wheel-turners were collected morning and evening by several guards. It was an extremely dangerous task; if they did not begin walking simultaneously, then one could fall, dragging the rest along with often fatal results. Before the gate could come down, it had to be raised, to pull out the iron pins that held it in place. Only then could it come down. While the gate was going down, walking in the wheel grew ever easier and faster, and many people stumbled and broke their limbs. The koppelpoort was also never breached.

Starting the hike to peak early morning while it is still dark, shivers from the cold wind, find way on steep ascent using the head torch and then finally the view from the top of the mountain, is definitely always worth it.
