So named due to the silvery blue metallic spots on the underside hind wings. The upperside are a rich, deep iridescent blue in the males with a black border and the characteristic Lycid white fringe. on the hindwings there is a row of inconspicuous black spots along the bottom edge. Females are dark brown with orange spots at the edges. On some sites the female has blue colouration but never as extensive as the male and she always possesses the orange spots. The undersides are a typical "Blue" design. The ground colour is silvery grey with blue suffusion at the base of the wings in the male and brown in the female. There are a number of black spots, each outlined in white and a row of orange spots along the outer edge of the hindwings, extending onto the forwings in the female. It is next to these orange spots that the "silver-studs" can be seen. Most easily confused with the Common Blue, it is generally slightly smaller and in the male the blue is a darker shade. The Common Blue also has an additional black spot at the base of the underside forewing.

The fortunes of the Heathcoat-Amory family were founded in the early nineteenth century. John Heathcoat was born into a Derbyshire farming family in 1783. An inventor of genius, he designed and patented a machine that revolutionised the production of lace. His manufactury near Loughbourough was destroyed by former Luddites paid by unknown persons in 1816, he then moved his basis of manufacture, and a large number of his workers, to Tiverton, Devon and there established a lace-works which, by the later part of the nineteenth century, was the largest lace-producing manufactory in the world.
By the late 19th century, the Heathcoat-Amory family owned much of the manufacturing and land around Tiverton, Sir John Heathcoat-Amory, 1st Baronet chose the site of Knightshayes, because from the site Sir John could see his factory in the distance, nestled in the Exe valley below.
The gardens were designed by Edward Kemp but were much simplified in the 1950s and '60s. Sir John and Lady Heathcoat-Amory undertook much work in the gardens for which they were both awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Victoria Medal of Honour. The estate includes a rare stické court dating from 1907. Other features include the extensive topiary, specimen trees, rare shrubs and the stables and walled kitchen garden, also by Burges.

This blue is the “Bleu Roi” or King’s Blue.

A cute little blue tit clinging to the edge of the feeding station, out of shot are two robins, and he as waiting for them to leave before he got stuck into the food.
Good morning everyone and I hope you had a nice weekend. Featured today for Butterfly Monday is the Eastern Tailed-blue (Cupido comyntas). Along with Azures the Dainty Sulphur, the Eastern Tailed-blue is without a doubt our smallest butterfly locally with a wing span of only 7/8 - 1 1/8 inches (2.2 - 2.9 cm) wide. With wings closed it's about as big as your thumbnail.
While these butterflies are one of the first to emerge in spring and have a long flight season well into autumn, they usually peak in numbers in late summer - early fall. And due to their tiny size they stretch the limits and macro capabilities of the 55-300 lens I always use. Making matters worse is they tend to stay very low to the ground requiring most picture taking be done on bended hands & knees. Not an easy task for someone my age...with getting back up being the hard part :-)
In spite of all that, I hope you enjoy this series of these little beauties and find the text on them in the comment section informative.
