A second Blessing of the Hands for nurses took place on May 7 in the late afternoon. The blessing is a traditional part of Nurses Week.

Saturday...the afternoon planned for my family "birthday" dinner was spent in a scary, frantic ambulance ride with my husband. Thankfully, he's fine, though facing some medical tests in the next few days. Thoughts and prayers are muchly appreciated...

While I took a needed photo break, my darling Mr. Sparky2 added a new external hard drive and keyboard (without the sticky keys and need to plug it in again every few minutes!) I think I must have been seeing my world through new and more appreciative eyes, because it was all so wonderful that I collected over 200 photos with only a handful of "throwaways". Hence, the series title "Blessings..."

This is what my kids do with their meals everyday. Imagine they "shower" them with rainbows, hearts, suns ( and sometime even dinosaurs ) .

It´s a fun and creative way of blessing we made up!

When I was at the grocery store this afternoon, I was eyeing the poinsettia plants but decided not to purchase one due the rising cost of everything. Then this evening, as I was leaving my residential community to take Rusty for a walk, I spotted this poinsettia plant with a note that said, “Help yourself | Merry Xmas.” I decided I would take the plant as a blessing if it was still there when we returned, and sure enough it was. The kindness of people never ceases to amaze me!

I wish I had taken more photos of cute shops like this one while we were in Scotland.

Today, January 6, was a major religious festival in Greece and other orthodox countries, the feast of Epiphany (Theofania in Greek). It commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan.

After the Divine Liturgy in Church, the priests and congregation proceed to the nearest body of water, in this case Glyfada Beach, and proceed to bless the waters, finishing off by casting a cross into the water which is retrieved by swimmers who brave the cold waters. The one who retrieves the cross is especially blessed. Large numbers of people gather to witness the event, which is usually followed by a leisurely seafood meal in a nearby fish taverna.

I came across this scene in a market in a small town somewhere along the road between Hassan and Bangalore. The man on the right was a priest and he was blessing this cow, which has a deformity - you can just see the leg and hoof of another cow foetus growing out of its back, behind the hump. The priest was painting the cow with red and yellow powders, including the legs of the "twin". There was quite a crowd watching, but I didn't stay to see the whole ceremony, so I am not sure how it ended.

One of my favorite hymns, Count Your Blessing, has been weighing heavily on my heart the past few days. Count your blessings, name them one by one. Count your blessings, see what God has done. Count your blessings, name them one by one. Count your many blessings see what God has done.

My son, Eli, attends preschool at Notre Dame Elementary in Portsmouth, Ohio. This past Thursday, as the morning school day unfolded, NDE became the scene of the unimaginable. A gunman entered the school and stabbed and shot a teacher. This scene is one we read about happening in Colorado, Kentucky. Not Notre Dame Elementary. As a parent, aunt and friend of students attending NDE, disbelief was replaced by horror. The unimaginable suddenly real.

You may be wondering why this hymn is on my heart... out of this tragic day are many blessings. The biggest blessing to me as a parent is that Eli did not attend school that morning. I so wanted him to go because class pictures were being taken that day. He had been sick the day before and still did not look like he felt well. Because of that motherly (or something greater) nagging, I decided not to send him. Not only is this a blessing because he wasn't there, but I would have never gotten him back there had he experienced this tragedy. Eli has not been wanting to attend school lately. He has cried and it has taken everything in me to get him to go. As his teacher told me on the phone, "thank God Eli was not in school." Doesn't God work in mysterious ways?

The second and great blessing of the day is that no student was hurt. Do I need to say more?

The third blessing is for the staff at NDE. (Note... Eli is pictured with his teacher, Mrs. Smith) What courage and poise they displayed in a situation that had never before been tested in their professional lives. I can not say enough about the teachers, principal and staff at NDE. They are truly heroes.

A fourth blessing is that the teacher attacked is going to survive and is expected to make a full recovery.

Another blessing bestowed upon our community that day is our law enforcement. I truly feel safe because of the actions of our local heroes.

So... out of this tragedy are blessings abundent. A long journey of healing lie ahead for the NDE community. God will shine his blessings upon this great group. Indeed, he already has.
