Laser Cutting, Past, Present & Future

Out of the blue, I froze for a bit, I saw the shadow of a snake resting in a drainage pipe. I wonder if it's venomous (kinda dark), but at the same time I saw a big fat Spotted House gecko (Gekko monarchus) with a short tail stump (evident of its previous lucky escape).

I shone my torch on it (gecko). The gecko got scared and tries to get away from my light, and headed to the nearest dark spot which coincidently is the drain pipe. And the rest is history.

In a split second, the Common Wolf Snake (Lycodon capucinus) coiled itself around the gecko. Both struggled and dropped down from the upper drain pipe to an open space by a huge drain. In short, I sat and watched as this hungry CWS coiled onto the gecko, suffocated it then swallow it a bit by bit. it took about 1.5 hours to complete the whole process. Real-life Nat Geo unfold before my eyes.

Note: I had to move them to a safer area before both animals might drop into a deeper drain. Carefully I moved them on a big leaf then to a mossy patch.

Dite: Geckos, small rodents and skinks.

Size: 2 feet (snake)

Location: Peninsular Malaysia.

Oviparous (egg-laying),

Note: This real-time predator & prey situation, not a staged set of photos.

believe it or not, Birdie likes to bully Little Bit sometimes when he comes inside

Why do I continue to buy small animals?

At least I finally have all the solid color parrots :)

A bit of a gem in Springvale. It's the only place I know of that serves a delicious crab soup with mung bean noodles.

My good friend & work colleague Mr Richard Davey aka Photonstorm kept a secret from me in the run-up the Droplet launch, and that secret was that he was working on an 8-bit style Droplet game!

His pixel partner in crime Ilija Melentijavic faithfully reproduced the Droplets in full 8-bit stylee whilst Rich set to work creating a 5 level game, with the aim being to get the 5 different Droplets to the Jam Factory in time for the launch!

If that wasn't enough, it even comes complete with NES-Style sound effects too, to give it that perfect retro feel!

I want to say a massive thank you to Rich and Ilija for creating something so wonderful for me and everyone else to enjoy, I very much appreciate their super hard work!

So, what are you waiting for - Go and play!

Bit of a slow day today and I didnt get some of the stuff done that I wanted to, but I got to vid call with Hal and Cat and do some painting, and it was so chill and lovely 💖💖💖

Been a little bit since I did a selfie, and I wanted to play a bit with black and white portraiture, so I set up the strobes, plopped myself down in front of our piano, and played a bit. I think this one actually worked out pretty well, even if I am pretty scruffy from being 6 or 7 days into letting the beard fill in.

Nikon D7000 w/Nikkor 50mm ƒ/1.8 prime, 1/250@ ƒ/2.8, ISO100. One SB-700 just to the right of frame firing perpendicular to my face through a white umbrella, 1/20 power, 70mm zoom; second SB-700 to the left of the frame, firing through a white umbrella towards the piano, 1/40 power, 18mm zoom. Basic RAW processing and slight crop in Aperture, with the black & white treatment in Nik Silver Efex (starting with the “Fine Art Process” preset, with a few additional tweaks on top of it.)

Good session at the Climbing Works with friends and then a cool ride home the 'long way round' !! :)

SOOC

I thought this was really whimsical compared to the typical graffiti you find on trains.

I just took this film from January to be developed this past week.

I had a bit of a random idea for a set of photos. I'm one of those people who make lists, I don't know why. Anyway, for years I've been listing my favourite top ten books I've read in that year. So, for no good reason other than I was playing around with the camera I decided to shoot them stacked up in piles around the house.

This was my top ten in 2004:

1. Catch-22 - Joseph Heller

2. A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens

3. A Short History of Nearly Everything - Bill Bryson

4. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time - Mark Haddon

5. Raw Spirit - Iain Banks

6. Kingdom of Fear - Hunter S. Thompson

7. Bravemouth: Living with Billy Connolly - Pamela Stephenson

8. Wouldn't It Be Nice: My Own Story - Brian Wilson

9. The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown

10. Compañero: The Life and Death of Che Guevara - Jorge G. Castaneda

I again bit the bullet and filled in the rest of the brickwork with some shading to give it an even tone.

The maple tree (left) is giving me fits. It's soooo thick with foliage! I worked a bit with the #00 (the rest of the drawing is #000) to delineate the right-hand side of the masses of maple foliage to try to separate it from the house. I went carefully, because I don't want to overdo it.

After fighting the maple for a while, I darkened the tones of the landscaping foliage and tightened up bits of house here and there.

I haven't done a good job of time tracking on this project, but I'd estimate that I've spent about six hours on it so far, and have two or more still to go.

I need to figure out how to resolve the tops of the trees, and accomplish that. (I'm toying with bringing the two trees together in the top middle, with only a contour). I also need to find a way to render trees in the distance behind the roofline. This will make the roof pop out, in relief.

A couple of important techniques I've used in analyzing/evaluating my work as it progresses:

1. Set the drawing up on a mantle or chair and stand/sit well back from it. See how it all fits together, and how the values are coming along.

2. Look at the drawing in a mirror. This changes your perception enough that you see the work with new eyes. You may be pleasantly surprised to find it looks better than you thought. You will probably also notice some things that need improving. For me, it was that the roofline and peak of the house, on the left, needed to be strengthened, so I have addressed that here.

There is lots of fine detail.
