Bit breezy today and took this one hand held using the 600mm lens as they were in a fenced off part of the pond. Not sure i would have done much better even if i could of used the macro.
The Australian pelican, Pelecanus conspicillatus, has the the longest bill in the avian world. This cluster seemed a bit shy, maybe a little self conscious about their beautiful bills. Cairns, AU.
Had a great weekend painting and partying with cool people. A big thank you to the Def Kids for the invite and Sept for being a great host!

AA071 - IT'S A BIT WARM OUTSIDE - a multi-coloured abstract acrylic painting. 28.5x20cms on A4 250gsm paper. A strident block of vibrant red, seen through curtains of layered colour - green, orange, blue, white and black. All seen through highlights of copper. The three-dimensional layers were completed using palette knives.

Went to Ikea yesterday to buy some bits and pieces they missed in their home delivery.
Bumped into full blown Christmas.
A tad early, I think, to put it politely.
Brett paid $7000 several years ago for this #Volkswagen. I can never remember whether I had a round or square fuel gauge. And can not believe we used to camp or spend hours in the back seat. I had removed the back rest from #CLM174 for camping gear just after I bought it in 1965..
We slept in the back on the second night at Boranup down on the edge of the ocean in the sand dunes after meeting…

In this shoot there is all that I wanted there was in my “blow-up photo of the West”: The Mittens, the red desert, the dirt track, the sun rising on the horizon, the sky flooded with warm tones, a couple of small pink clouds, the morning haze and the dust of the desert and finally, a lucky break, a person, small, alone, down there in the middle of the road, which helps to strengthen the feeling of how much everything is huge and majestic.
Quite a bit of locomotive hauled action on the Tyne Valley today with four westbound engineering trains working their way back to Carlisle from work on the ECML but there was also some overnight work around Haltwhistle and the first train of the day was an eastbound working.
70813 (a relatively rare visit for the class to the Tyne Valley ), is at the head of with the 6C88 08:40 Haltwhistle - Doncaster Decoy passing Prudhoe signal box and crossing.

with a bit of experimenting (hate to waste frames of film, but sometimes that's the only way), i've found that for both the b&w (dated 4/14) and color (dated 10/13) made-for-Impossible-Lab (i.e. no battery) packs, using images straight from my iphone (most of them are Instagrammed) resulted in much too high of contrast -- like the first version of this one, where the blacks were all solidly blocked up, and almost no midtones at all.
reducing contrast using the Instant Lab app's setting on my iphone resulted in a cloudy-looking image.
reducing contrast for each image using Snapseed by about 40%, and then boosting the saturation back up a bit (maybe 20%?) resulted in a much better, balanced image.
it's a pain in the neck to have the extra steps, but definitely a more satisfying result.
A bit of postcode lottery today after local runner and bird enthusiast Marcus Doolan stumbled upon this Black Redstart at my local cycle track. Very convenient lockdown birding as the canal and cycle track are pretty much all I have to enjoy during lockdown.
Another one left over from my trip to Oregon in Dec/Jan, same place as the previous shot but a few steps back, not nearly as dramatic but still kinda cool I think :-)
I came across this group of women enjoying some well-earned rest after their day's chores in a village in remote Barot village in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh.I had gone on some work to this valley and I was taking a stroll through the pretty village after finishing my work.I tried not to disturb the ladies while they rested.The light was not too good and it is not a great shot but I thought my friends here would enjoy a glimpse into the simple but happy lives of people living in the remote villages of this beautiful state of India.
Might be worth a look in large.

This is another quick and dirty edit. I don't really have the time to spend much time editing lately so took about five minute to throw about 6 curve layers on here and a white balance shift. My favorite shot of the day is going to sit dormant for a while until I can figure out how to process it.
I spotted Charlie Widdis, local photographer and only other yahoo to brave the -12f this morning out on the rocks. The breakwater is completely exposed to the wind and damn it was chilly. I was hoping that there would be some seasmoke coming up over the breakwater but low tides combined with biting winds kept the smoke from really rising up in this area. To the right, the bay was filled with billowing smoke but no real interest.
Spent the morning playing with the telephoto to compress the smoke for a little more drama. I only popped the wide angle on for a few shots including this one. I always forget that just because you can't see something on your 2 inch lcd (in this case the seasmoke or lighthouse) doesn't mean that it won't turn out when viewed on a 27 inch monitor.
Interesting tidbit that I have now learned about walking on breakwaters in the winter over the last few days. Make sure you are probing where you step ahead of you. Not sure how many near disastrous steps I almost took into the crevices between the rocks.

I decided to get out for a bit of a hike yesterdau afternoon, the weather look changable and I didn't really feel like spending another day at home watching TV or messing about on the Computer. Starting from the Barbican I caught the ferry accross to Mount Batten and walked along the coast path.
Photography was never really the main idea, but I took my camara along with me but left my tripod at (which I regretted). I ended up at Bovisands and by now the weather was changing for the worse. Dark brooding clouds had came over and the wind had picked up. It was at this point I saw this scene. I tried to take the picture hand held, but it really didn't capture the movement in the ocean all that well. Luckily there was an old post box I was able to put my camera on to take this 5 sec long exposure.

Just a wee bit of messing around on a cool grey day! The light was lovely but there were distractions so I had a wee mess. Normally I would prefer not to touch a wild animal shot but the light was so good and the background, although dark, was not.
