On the eve of the 32nd anniversary of the Bhopal Disaster children from the Chingari Trust Rehabilitation Centre held a candlelight vigil in honour of the many thousands who have now lost their lives thanks to Union Carbide’s doomed pesticide factory.

The children sat, some of them holding candle but some not able, around a flower display simply spelling ‘commiserations’

The children at Chingari are all second or third generation sufferers of the effects of Union carbide’s poisons. Some are born to parents affected by the gas of the 1984 disaster, others are born to parents affected by water contaminated by poisonous chemicals leaching from abandoned toxic waste. As if to add hideous, painful insult to injury, some children are born to parents exposed to both the toxic gas and the contaminated water.

A chest shot showing the arm socket location. As you can tell from his size, the arm has not hindered him from eating and living a normal life. He hopped like any other toad we have seen. he is the average size of all toads on our property too. I do wonder if we shall ever spot him again.

My contact sheet for a roll of film I shot of the abandoned Fairchild Semiconductor plant in South San Jose. Sadly the negatives seem to be lost forever and this is all I have.

The plant closed because of an underground waste tank failure that leaked volatile organic compounds into the drinking water of a whole neighborhood, resulting in stillbirths, congenital heart defects, and various other birth defects. I read that four women on one block had miscarriages. The plant opened in 1977. The leak was discovered in 1981 and the plant was closed in 1983. It sat until around 1996 when cleanup was done.

I have never been able to find photos of the plant on the internet so I hope someone out in cyberspace happens upon them.

This is the photo I'm most proud of from my high school photography class. It was taken at the abandoned Fairchild Semiconductor plant in South San Jose. We happened upon it on our first photography trip to the plant (not school sanctioned).

I wonder what chemicals they're adding to sweatbands. All I can think of is the dye or mordant along with the cotton and elastic. I wish I had seen this BEFORE purchasing two of them, but it was in such tiny type that I needed to use the macro lens on my camera to get a shot of it.

Depakote is an anti-seizure medication originally approved by the FDA in 1983 to treat the symptoms associated with medical conditions like epilepsy and seizures. Later, physicians began to prescribe the drug to individuals suffering from bipolar disorder and migraine headaches as well. Recently, some studies have alleged that the medication has been linked to a high number of birth injuries such as clef palate and facial dysmorphism birth defects. Depakote and clef palate defects are a situation in which the soft or hard tissue of the mouth does not form properly during fetal development, leaving a gaping hole which must be repaired with surgery after birth.

This crocodile at Le Bonheur crocodile farm between Paarl and Franschhoek did not have a tail, due to a birth defect. It cannot swim, so it was in a separate enclosure, together with another crocodile with the same defect.

A few babies may even die. Smoking during and after pregnancy is a risk factor of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). SIDS is an infant death for which a cause of the death cannot be found. Babies born to women who smoke are more likely to have certain birth defects, like a cleft lip or cleft palate. On average, smoking during pregnancy doubles the chances that a baby will be born too early or weigh less than 5 1/2 pounds at birth. Smoking also more than doubles the risk of stillbirth. Every cigarette you smoke increases the risks to your pregnancy.
