Sealcoating definitely improves the looks of a parking lot, driveway or roadway. But at what cost? Is this another case of 'looks can be deceiving' ? The answer is a resounding .. Y E S !!!! Sealcoat is made from coal-tar, a known carcinogen (cancer causing agent) and is now being linked to chemical sensitivities, respiratory reactions and birth defects. This is very dangerous material.

The Go Vap orphanage is one of the largest orphanages in Southern Vietnam. The orphanage provides food, housing, and education to about 200 children in the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City. Many of the children, aged from newborns to eighteen years old, have mental or physical disabilities and the orphanage raises and educates them. The people who care for the children are loyal, caring and diligent, but sadly their resources are limited. The orphans' rooms are often filled to maximum capacity leaving little room for playing or personal space."

This was my first trip to an orphanage and it probably shouldn't have surprised me that the kids would seek the attention and love of us volunteers.

"Warning: Automobile fuel and its by-products contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm."
After reading this, I wonder how many people re-think chauffeuring their kids around in cars everywhere. Probably not many. Maybe they need to start putting these types of signs directly on cars, like they did with cigarette packages.

The nurses, doctors and support staff of Go Vap are self-sacrificing heroes. My hat's off to them.

Crazy, but true. These guys had a whole freak show of weird animals. We were planning on checking it out for $3, but we ended up not checking it out.

Ms. Freaky Beaky was a lot tamer than the other mallards. Or perhaps desperate for food due to her strange beak making it more difficult to find food? Anyway, she didn't even hesitate to take food right out of our hands, licking them with her funny little pink tongue...
While it was cute and all, we decided it would be best to just throw her the food (and next time it will be tasty worms and grasshoppers). She's still a wild bird and it's not really that good of a thing if she's too trusting of humans...

Both us volunteers and the orphans became fast friends and the children enjoyed our company.

Application of coal-tar based sealcoat is done primarily by spraying the mixture onto an asphalt or concrete surface. The mixture is hot and pressurized. Thus a pressurized atomization of the mixture is sensitive to over-spray and wind. Not only is sealcoat subject to runoff contamination; particulate contamination: in time frames post application: but as well as at the time of application.
