Throughout her youth, she got into her fair share of trouble running with a gang known as the “Wreckers” who soon adopted her as part of their family. The “Wreckers” specialized in vandalizing and petty theft. These crimes would often get Trixie noticed by the New Brickton police, and she eventually built up an lengthy record of offenses. Trixie discovered her innate ability to “always hit her target” while evading the police, and she soon used it to her benefit to remain one step ahead of the law.

Dickson House is of course the house of the first British political agent in Kuwait, built in 1870. Colonel Dickson was the British Political Agent to Kuwait from 1929-1936, who then worked for the Kuwait Oil Company after he retired from the British government. Col. Dickson passed away in 1959 but his wife, Dame Violet, also known as Umm Saud أم سعود, remained in Kuwait in their family home on the Gulf Road until she passed away in 1991 at the age of 92. Most people in Kuwait still remember Umm Saud, as she was a fixture in Kuwait up until the invasion.

The Lives, the Loves and the Sexual Adventures of Some Scandalous and Liberated Ladies.

I recently made a modest art-historical discovery when I happened across an obscure reference to early illustrations by the American painter, art instructor and art school director Channel Pickering Townsley (1867-1921).

Chan is best known today for the California Impressionist works and European city scenes he painted in the first two decades of the 20th century.

However, these recently rediscovered pieces, which are not mentioned in Chan's biographies, reveal that he was already an accomplished artist by the mid-1890s.

The small item from the issue of 7 April, 1909, issue of The Great Bend Weekly Tribune, of Great Bend, Kansas, that put me on the trail of Chan's forgotten illustrations appears below.

They appeared in Ellen P. Allerton's Walls Of Corn and Other Poems, collected and published by Eva Ryan.

Astonishingly, the 1894 book is still available through Amazon and other retailers as a modern reproduction of the original. It is likely the quality of the images is higher in the original than in the copy. www.amazon.com/Ellen-Palmer-Allertons-Walls-Other/dp/1164...

Townsley's name appears quite clearly on some of these works. Whether the others bear his name is a matter of conjecture. Marks that resemble indistinct letters can be found in the general area of the lower right corner. For what it is worth, the artist did not sign all his paintings.

Chan was about 27 years old when the volume of poems in which they appear was published. It remains to be determined when these works were created relative to Townsley's considerable formal art education in New York and Paris.

The illustrations appear in the same order as in the original. Immediately below you will find the poem that was the inspiration for the image.

=======================

"Treeless desert " they called it then,

Haunted by beasts and forsook by men.

Little they knew what wealth untold,

Lay hid where the desolate prairies rolled.

Who would have dared, with brush or pen

As this land is now, to paint it then?

And how would the wise ones have laughed in scorn,

Had prophets foretold these walls of corn,

Whose banners toss on the breeze of morn?

=======================

ALLERTON, Mrs. Ellen Palmer, poet, born in Centerville, N. Y.. 17th October, 1835. Her ancestors were of Knickerbocker blood. She received a district-school education and afterwards spent a few terms in academies, but never graduated.

Her marriage to Alpheus B. Allerton, took place in 1862, soon after her removal to Wisconsin. Mr. and Mrs. Allerton were both invalids in Wisconsin, but in 1879, traveled to Kansas in a wagon, cooking their own meals and getting health and happiness out of the journey.

They selected for a home an unimproved farm, a quarter section, on very high land in Brown county, in sight of Padonia, Hamlin, Falls City and Hiawatha.

They now have a handsome home and every comfort that prosperity brings in its train.

Mrs. Allerton composed and recited verses before she could write, but offered little to the press until she was past thirty years of age.

Her first poems were published in "The Jefferson County Union," Ex-Governor Hoard's paper. Later she contributed to Milwaukee and Chicago papers, and was at one time book-reviewer for the Milwaukee "Sentinel."

She has published one volume, "Poems of the Prairies." (New York, 1886). She is considered one of the leading authors of Kansas. As a woman and as a writer she is quiet and sensible.

At her home in Padonia she has a wide circle of loving friends, and throughout the West the hearts that hold her dear are legion.

"Intimate tales of Broadway's guys and gals."

From Kirkus Review:

A loving recall which gives the quality of the man as well as his writings that kept him so long in public affection, this biography draws heavily from Runyon's own columns and stories to fill in the picture. A Kansas boy, who through the newspaper game, he was a reporter at 15, and via the Spanish-American war in which he saw action in Manila, took the chance to come to New York to publicize a utilities convention and fell in love with the city. He became the chronicler of its guys and dolls and made its main stem and side street characters familiar to the newspaper and magazine world. Columns, short stories, later made into moving pictures, homely verse -- these were his passports to a wide public. Here are his friends, the original material for his stories, the quirks of his personality, and his last years of cancer of the throat which did not keep him from the dawn patrol with Winchell, nor from being a local celebrity. Keyed to Runyon's readers, this should have its own popularity.

They (animals) are not just living things; they are beings with lives... that makes all the difference in the world...next time you are outside...notice the first bird you see…you are beholding a unique individual with personality traits, an emotional profile, and a library of knowledge built on experience…what you are witnessing is not just biology, but a biography.

A full interview with the Israeli painter Raphael Perez (in Hebrew Rafi Peretz) about the ideas behind the naive painting, resume, personal biography and CV

Question: Raphael Perez Tell us about your work process as a naive painter?

Answer: I choose the most iconic and famous buildings in every city and town that are architecturally interesting and have a special shape and place the iconic buildings on boulevards full of trees, bushes, vegetation, flowers.

Question: How do you give depth in your naive paintings?

Answer: To give depth to the painting, I build the painting with layers of vegetation, after those low famous buildings, followed by a tall avenue of trees, and behind them towers and skyscrapers, in the sky I sometimes put innocent signs of balloons, kites.

A recurring motif in some of my paintings is the figure of the painter who is in the center of the boulevard and paints the entire scene unfolding in front of him, also there are two kindergarten teachers who are walking with the kindergarten children with the state flags that I paint, and loving couples hugging and kissing and family paintings of mother, father and child walking in harmony on the boulevard.

Question: Raphael Perez What characterizes your naive painting?

Answer: Most naive paintings have the same characteristics

(Definition as it appears in Wikipedia)

• Tells a simple story to absorb from everyday life, usually with humans.

• The representation of the painter's idealization to reality - the mapping of reality.

• Failure to maintain perspective - especially details even in distant details.

• Extensive use of repeating patterns - many details.

• Warm and bright colors.

• Sometimes the emphasis is on outlines.

• Most of the characters are flat, lack volume

• No interest in texture, expression, correct proportions

• No interest in anatomy.

• There is not much use of light and shadow, the colors create a three-dimensional effect.

I find these definitions to be valid for all my naive paintings

Question: Raphael Perez Why do you mainly choose the city of Tel Aviv?

Answer: I was born in Jerusalem, the capital city which I love very much and also paint,

I love the special Bauhaus buildings in Tel Aviv, the ornamental buildings that were built a century ago in the 1920s and 1930s, the beautiful boulevards, towers and modern skyscrapers give you the feeling of the hustle and bustle of a large metropolis and there are quite a few low and tall buildings that are architecturally fascinating in their form the special one

Also, the move to Tel Aviv, which is the capital of culture, freedom, and secularism, allowed me to live my life as I chose, to live in a relationship with a man, Jerusalem, which is a traditional city, it is more complicated to live a homosexual life, also, the art world takes place mainly in the city of Tel Aviv, and it is possible that from a professional point of view, this allows I can support myself better in Tel Aviv than in any other city in Israel.

Question: raphael perez are the paintings of the city of Tel Aviv different from the paintings of the city of Jerusalem

Answer: Most of the paintings of Jerusalem have an emphasis on the color yellow, gold, the color of the old city walls, the subjects I painted in Jerusalem are mainly a type of idealization of a peaceful life between Jews and Arabs and paintings that deal with the Jewish religious world, a number of paintings depict all shades of the currents of Judaism of today

In contrast, the Tel Aviv paintings are more colorful, with skyscrapers, the sea, balloons and more secular motifs

Question: Raphael Perez Tell us about which buildings and their architects you usually choose in your city paintings

Answer: My favorite buildings are those that have a special shape that anyone can recognize and are the symbols of the city and you will give several examples:

In the city of Tel Aviv, my favorite buildings are: the opera building with its unusual geometric shape, the Yisrotel tower with its special head, the Hail Bo Shalom tower that for years was the symbol of the tallest building in Tel Aviv, the Levin house that looks like a Japanese pagoda, the burgundy-colored Nordeau hotel with the special dome at the end of the building, A pair of Alon towers with the special structure of the sea, Bauhaus buildings typical of Tel Aviv with the special balconies and the special staircase, the Yaakov Agam fountain in Dizengoff square appears in a large part of the paintings, many towers that are in the stock exchange complex, the Aviv towers and other tall buildings on Ayalon, in some of the paintings I took plans An outline of future buildings that need to be built in the city and I drew them even before they were built in reality,

In the paintings of Jerusalem, I mainly chose the area of the Old City and East Jerusalem, a painting of the walls of the Old City, the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the El Akchea Mosque, the Tower of David, most of the famous churches in the city, the right hand of Moses, in most of the paintings the Jew is wearing a blue shirt with a red male cord I was in the youth movement and the Arab with a galabia, and in the paintings of the religious public then, Jews with black suits and white shirts, tallitas, kippahs, special hats, synagogues and more

I also created three paintings of the city of Haifa and one painting of Safed

In the Haifa paintings I drew the university, the Technion, the famous Egged Tower, the Sail Tower, well-known hotels, of course the Baha'i Gardens and the Baha'i Temple, Haifa Port and the boats and other famous buildings in the city

Question: Have you created series of other cities from around the world?

Answer: I created series of New York City with all the iconic and famous buildings such as: the Guggenheim Museum, the famous skyscrapers - the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, Lincoln Center, the famous synagogue in the city, the Statue of Liberty, the flags of the United States and other famous buildings

Two paintings of London and all its famous sites, Big Ben, famous monuments, the Ferris wheel, Queen Elizabeth and her family, the double bus, the famous public telephone, palaces, famous churches, well-known monuments

I created 4 naive paintings of cities in China, a painting of Shanghai, two paintings of the city of Suzhou and a painting of the World Park in the city of Beijing... I chose the famous skyline of Shanghai with all the famous towers, the famous promenade, temples and old buildings, two Paintings of the city of Suzhou with the famous canals, bridges, special gardens, towers and skyscrapers of the city

Today the Hereios of the We're Here! group are depicting Me and My Bookmark. I have a habit of starting to read biographies but losing interest when the person has got to where they're going. I'm more interested in their ascent than their arrival. I've got as far as 2011 in the case of David Cameron (a year or so after he became prime minister), and towards the end of Boris Yeltsin's ascent. I haven't read any of the Cameron book for at least a year. I can recommend the Aron biography though; Yeltsin's early career is a model of how to rise through the ranks through great diligence and attention to detail. I put the book down about ten years ago, and plan to resume reading it one day...

Mary Wilson

Ms. Mary Wilson still performs with the same passion as she did singing with the original

Supremes, but the world renowned celebrity is now using her fame and flair to promote

humanitarian efforts to end hunger, raise AIDS awareness and encourage world peace.

While Ms. Wilson is best known as a founding member of the world’s most famous female trio –

they recorded 12 No.1 hits from 1964 to 1969 – the legendary singer’s career did not stop there,

and she continues to soar to untold heights.

Ms. Wilson is a best-selling author, motivational speaker, businesswoman, former U.S. Cultural

Ambassador, the recipient of an Associate Degree from New York University in 2001, and an

honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. In 2007, Ms. Wilson

was named international spokeswoman for the Humpty Dumpty Institute, a platform she uses to

condemn the death and destruction caused by hidden landmines and unexploded ordnances in less

developed countries

Dreamgirls

The Play, The Movie

Interest in the Supremes’ legacy was renewed after the release of the award-winning film

“Dreamgirls,” in 2006. While the film created a wonderful piece of work using the likeness of

the Supremes, as well as their history, Ms. Wilson said it did not depict their true story.

The Primettes

The true story began nearly 50 years ago when Ms. Wilson started singing as a teenager while

living in Detroit’s Brewster-Douglass Projects. Performing at an elementary school talent

showcase, she befriended Florence Ballard. They made a pledge to remember each other if they

joined a singing group. The opportunity came in 1959 when Milton Jenkins, the manager of a male

singing group, the Primes, decided to organize a spin-off girls’ group. A friend of the Primes,

Betty McGlown, was the first person asked, and then Florence Ballard, who invited Ms. Wilson.

One of the Primes, Paul Williams, recruited Diane Ross, who just happened to be a neighbor of

Ms. Wilson’s, to round out the quartet ‘The Primettes’. After doing many rock and roll DJ shows

around the Detroit area, performing songs by popular artists, such as Ray Charles and the

drifters, at sock hops, social clubs and talent shows, the Primettes decided to audition for the

up and coming Motown record company. Unfortunately Mr. Gordy told them to come back and see him

after they all graduated from high school.

Determined to leave an impression on Motown President, Berry Gordy, Jr., and join the stable of

rising Motown stars, the Primettes frequented his Hitsville, USA recording studio every day

after school. Eventually, they convinced Mr. Gordy to sign them to his label. Much to their

surprise Paul Williams and another ’Prime’ member Eddie Kendricks, had joined Otis William & the

’Distants’ to become members of the ‘Temptations’.

Although Gordy signed the girls to his label- it was under one condition, that they changed

their name of the group. At this time Betty had left the group and was replaced with Barbara

Martin. On January 15th 1961 the Primettes officially became The Supremes. On the day of the

signing when Gordy asked them for their new name Florence was the only one who had collected a

list of names from her family and friends and chose the ‘Supremes’.

In the spring of 1962, after regarding a few songs for their first album, Barbara Martin left

the group to start a family. Thus the newly named Supremes continued as a trio; which to this

day remains one of their trademark signatures.

The SupremesFrom 1961 to 1963, the Supremes recorded many songs and released eight singles. At

Motown the Supremes were jokingly referred to as the “no-hit Supremes.” But their fate changed

dramatically in late 1963 when the song “When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes,”

written and produced by Holland-Dozier-Holland, peaked at number 23 on the Billboard pop chart.

About her: I stumbled upon her on eBay. She was offered like a new one, in a box that was damaged. So she was for a half of the usual price. I was so happy to get her like that – with her wonderful red dress from Titanic. She got the main role in my first literary adaptation – “Pride and Prejudice”. She was my Elizabeth Bennet.

J'ai adoré la colombe poignardée.

Em português / and in English:

Arthur Bispo do Rosário was Born in 1911 (or 1909) in Japaratuba, in the state of Sergipe and moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1925, where he entered the Navy Cadet School. For eight years he was a sailor and, too, a boxer. In 1933 he went to work for the Light company to wash streetcars and repair tyres. An accident at work led him to sue the company and introduced him to Humberto Leone, a lawyer, for whom he came to do all kinds of domestic tasks in exchange for room and board. In December 1938 Bispo do Rosário hallucinated and saw Christ emerge from de back yard of Leone’s house, accompanied by seven blue engels. He wandered around Rio de Janeiro for two days until he was interned in the Praia Vermelha mental hospital. The following years, he was diagnosed as paranoid schizofrenic and transferred to the Juliano Moreira Colony in Jacarepaguá, in the suburbs of Rio. He left the asylum in 1944 and from that time worked, on and off, as a hotel doorman, assistant in a lawyer’s office and bodyguard for a senator. At the beginning of the 1960s he was hired as a janitor and handyman at a pediatric clinic. At that time, Bispo lived alone in a garret and produced part of his work. In 1964 he returned to the Juliano Moreira Colony and begun to fill a labyrinth of cells in Pavillion 10 with his work, filling the heart of the asylum that he never left again. Bispo made hundreds of objects and miniatures, assemblages and embroidery, canopies and banners out of junk and scraps. Author of his own particular vocabulary, in the dark interior of the colony he reinvented shoes, cups, hammers, corks, pencils, soap dishes, watches and combs in an endless list that he tirelessly made longer. He was anxious to catalogue everything he could before the great day of accounting before God. He never considered himself an artist, but an enlightened being, son of the Virgin Mary, who had been assigned to save part of the real world and its souls. Bispo stayed the course in his odyssey as creator of a unique oeuvre until July 5, 1989, when he died at the age of 78, of a heart attack and arteriosclerosis. In October 1989, the Parque Lage Visual Arts School held the first individual exhibition in his honor. At the beginning of 1993 the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro sponsored a more complete retrospective of almost 800 pieces. International fame came in 1995, at the 46th Venice Biennale. In 2000 his work was one of the highlights of the Rediscovery of Brazil Exhibition Brazil + 500, in São Paulo. At the end of 2001, part of that exhibition was sent to the Guggenheim Museum in New York in the Brazil: Body and Soul show. His work has been part of other important collective exhibitions, like Viva Brasil Viva (1991, in Stockholm), Así Está la Cosa: Instalación y Arte Objeto en America Latina (1997, in Mexico City), Cotidiano/Arte. O Objeto – Anos 90 and Por que Duchamp? (both in 1999, in São Paulo), Cartier Foundation (2001, in Paris). Today, the Bispo do Rosário Museum at the Juliano Moreira Colony holds and preserves all of what he made.

Here's one to ponder. Go and take a picture of your bookshelf or part of it. Leave it just like it is or re-arrange it. Does it tell all about you? Does it tell some about you? Does it say anything at all?

Look at it in LARGE size.
