yospyn.com - Spent a few hours on Saturday photographing Kushi's catering and drinks. Almost everything I do these days involves portraiture or editorial, so this was a fun break. Food doesn't move or ask for direction. It just sits there, looking delicious.

Btw, photographing anything from above is not easy. Except the bowls, those were easy.

A little experiment...

I prepared the ingredients but Jeremy did the crafty rolling of the sushi!

Pasta salads - hard to photograph! This is a closeup that attempts at non-messiness. Recipe for this salad is on JB.

The fabric is Illustration Ink's "Bento Box" line (by Robert Kaufman). Tricks I still need to master:

1. Getting the paper backing off the WonderUnder! I couldn't believe how hard it was to get it started, and on both this and the little applique on the reverse side, I frayed the edges trying to get it to separate. I am going to have to do some online research to see what I'm doing wrong. (This is raw edge applique, and I expect it to fray over time/with washing, so I'm okay with it ultimately, but I want the paper to come off more easily, regardless.)

2. Positioning the applique. It's pretty straight, but now that it's really on there, I wish I'd nudged it just a hair.

3. Stitching nicely around the edge. I have trouble maneuvering the fabric/onesie on the bed of the machine, especially around curves. On this side, I ended up hand cranking the needle on the curves, stopping with the needle down to pivot fabric as necessary. I lack some kind of gene/allele that tells me how to sew nice curves, apparently.

As a first trial run, though, I'm satisfied, and I will stick this on both kids at some point!

A frozen concentrate for 'instant' vegetable soup that's packed with veg! Perfect for bento boxes - just add hot water. Details on JB.

home made sushi (definitely NOT as good as restaurant made sushi!)

At the monthly market (en-nichi) at Toji Koboji in Kyoto.

This is fancier than Family Market's usual bento boxes and pricier. On the other hand, it also has more food. The salmon had a sort of mayonnaise under it. The rice had some katsuoboshi, dried bonito flakes under the nori.

This was a very good and filling lunch.

A bento assembled in under 10 minutes. Brown rice mixed with chopped pickled vegetabled (tsukemono) is topped by dry-fried crispy fried tofu (atsuage). Recipe, how-to etc on jb.

Spicy-salty-sweet mix. Great on rice, or by the spoonful.

Recipe here.

I showed great restraint at Daiso the other day. I only bought two boxes and these two forks. Maybe because I bought everything else last time....

Added a piece of cod, increased the amount of rice.

The hijiki has pig-shaped atsuage and heart-shaped carrots! I'm not sure this registered with the eater.

This one is not vegan obviously since it has fish...

Falafel, Plum, mango, OSP, tomatoes, mango, mushrooms korma.

Can you identify each item in Saba Man's lunch?

Dragon gizzards sauteed in jackalope blood, roasted basilisk scales, shrunken heads with gargoyle oil, grilled griffin skin with intestines, giant red ant eggs and some sour-glop leaves freshly plucked from a haunted castle's gutters.

Read about the shrunken head recipe on hapabento's blog.

I feel like a huge dork bringing when I bring this to work. I usually keep it in my lunch bag as I take out the snacks that are hidden inside. It brightens up my day.

After a posting hiatus, here's my latest bento.

Top to Bottom: Baggie of Gobi trail mix, artisan French bread, flat leaf parsley, tofu scramble (tofu w/soy sauce, egg, Italian mushrooms, red bell pepper and green onion) and broiled potatoes.
