At various times the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (the National Geodetic Survey since 1970) has placed benchmark disks in communities nationwide. This one is of metal (brass perhaps) set in the old Bank of La Crosse, La Crosse, Mecklenburg County, Virginia. This one dates from 1934 and provides the elevation above mean sea level. This benchmark clearly represents the numerous similar bolts that I've posted here and that are most capable for marking the altitude. This particular one has been set to a base of its own and therefore is propably a bit older than the suburb area that 'starts' from this point.
It is also exiting to think that this benchmark has been set here to help with marking of the area and lines of the buildings before they were built in the mid 1960's. So one can see it as a metaphor for and a relic of urban planning.

The base of the tower bears an ordnance survey bench mark with bolt - see note.
This mark was applied sometime between July 1844 and June 1845 when a line between Darlington and Scarborough was being surveyed.
It's almost time to sit back and reflect on another year over. Or, sit down and look forward to what next year might bring.
