At the end of the logging road to Downton Valley lies a beautiful little lake below the headwall.

Okay, maybe they're not as big as the Cliffs Of Insanity, but they're just as exciting to visit!

This image is in my latest YouTube video exploring the Sooke area on Vancouver Island.

10:52 Out of focus

While it seems like this is a bit of a cheat, I actually took this with intention. If I zoom with my iPhone, the focus of the shot seriously degenerates. The only photoshopping I did on this image was to convert to B&W, and to very slightly increase the contrast. The impressionist feel is not a filter, but rather just the iPhone lens doing its thing. In this case, I think it's actually kind of a neat look.

Exploring the Pacific Northwest by boat is amazing and wonderful! ( ...in good weather or bad, rain or shine)

This male Rufous hummingbird is about to catch his meal (zoom in to see the tiny fly in front of the birds beak).

Historic flood levels have caused terrible devastation in the Fraser Valley but the kindness, cooperation, giving and care shared by the community is truly cause for a positive and optimistic view of things!

Anything Goes 2021: Colour Monochrome

This little Grizzly is the star of episode 8 of netflixs show wild babies. Recently a large male was interested in his mother so she left him behind so he was not killed by the male. He was feeding on mussels when we found him.

A Barred Owl roosts in a maple tree in a forest soon to be harvested in Abbotsford, BC., Canada. This Barred Owl hooted as did a nearby Great Horned Owl. What a pleasure seeing and hearing both owls in a short hike from our home.

I was trying to think of a clever title for this photo, and came up with a few that were okay, but then I wondered what the name of that rich red colour was. Maybe that would give me something inspired and interesting to say. I searched all kinds of colour and paint tools, but ended up at...lo and behold, wikipedia. Visually, the closest colour match in their list was named...Barn Red. Imagine that! Sometimes simple is best. :)

The tide was out and the skies went on forever. A blue heron was fishing with Mt. Baker in the distance. Quite a lovely vista. Thanks for your appreciation, Gail Instagram @gks1950

1.52: Beauty's Nothing

Perceiving beauty is the first step in appreciating this magnificent world that surrounds us. The next is allowing yourself to experience it fully. We need to take risks, say yes to opportunities, open ourselves up to chance adventures. It's then that we truly see the splendour and glory.

As a parent, and for practical reasons, I've been reluctant to fly with my husband in his airplane. I woke on New Year's Day and decided it was time to seize the day. The snow capped Golden Ears mountains were spectacular to see - full of beauty. The flight, however, was an adventure that filled my soul with awe. I'm looking forward to a year of beautiful photographs and inspiring experiences!

The Abbotsford Airshow was a thriller again this year. Lots of photos in my inbox waiting to be edited. :D

If you're into aerial photography, here are 3 minutes of my best shots from last year's show:

I don't usually post so late in the evening, but tonights post was too much cuteness not to share. I spent 2 1/2 hrs this afternoon with this little Barred Owlet, and its mom. The other siblings chose to stay high in the trees and out of view. This one was pretty high up too, had to find a break in between the branches of the limb it was perched on to find a fairly clear view.

Beautiful day out at Botanical Beach - Port Renfrew

The marine fog drifted in and out of the trees the whole time we were there and the tide was an ultra low one this am allowing us to get out further than I have ever been - awesome day!

When the world moves too fast and you loose yourself in the chaos,

introduce yourself to each color of the sunset.

Reacquaint yourself with the earth beneath your feet.

Thank the air that surrounds you with every breath you take.

Find yourself in the appreciation of life.

"Knee-deep in the wilderness,

my soul strums to an orchestra of nature’s sounds.

And within that rhythm, I absolutely meet pure bliss.”

Haven't made it out in the snow as of yet, been busy keeping my hummingbirds and regular birds happy in the snow and wind. 🐦

In the late evening, already past the Blue Hour, the outline of this Container ship could be seen against a brilliant sunset sky.
