Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis)

Knight Inlet, BC

This young grizzly cub was the highlight of our entire day and we spent some time observing from a distance. Its personality was so playful, almost like it was performing for us. This cub was born in Feb or March of this year (2021), so estimated to be about 3-5 months old.

I don’t normally post a series of photos, but this little one is far too adorable not to.

Female grizzlies typically have their first litter when they are 6 years old with mating season occurring in late May to early July.

Eggs fertilized in the summer will not implant until the bear goes into hibernation in the fall. This delay helps ensure the female (Sow) has sufficient nutrients to handle the pregnancy. Cubs are born in the den in January to March during hibernation, and will remain there until spring.

A litter is typically 1-4 cubs. Grizzly bears are not monogamous, so litter mates will often have different fathers.

We had a solid week of snow at the beginning of the year. Made for lots of fun on the evening walk. This apartment is called Bluewater Towers. It's not a tower; it's not on the water.

'According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way that a bee should be able to fly.

Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground.

The bee, of course, flies anyways.

Because bees don't care what humans think is impossible.'

Fabulous find while out walking in the forest on an unmarked trail. Someone has taken the time to line the path with shells all the way in - gorgeous area on North Beach. Tow Hill in the background.

After an exhilarating hike of plentiful tree roots and mud we were rewarded with some of the most gorgeous views I've seen in a long time. A spectacular day for an adventure!

Beautiful Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, Canada.

About this photo: This is a photo I took a couple of summers ago at beautiful Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park, BC and also part of the Canadian Rockies.

On one of the days we were in the Canadian Rockies the plan was to visit Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park to rent a canoe for 1 hour. We arrived at 5.50pm and headed to the canoe rentals only to see a sign that the canoe rentals were closed for the day. On the website it says they are open until 7pm, so we figured if we get there a little before 6pm we would be able to go. But when we got there the lady at the desk said that last canoes go out at 5.45pm and was firm about it. We could not rent a canoe that evening...we missed it by 5 min. We would have come earlier if we knew! That was so disappointing as we wouldn't be able to go back there again during this trip. 😭😭 😭 Thankfully my disappointment disappeared quickly after seeing the lake becoming quite calm in the early evening light. We enjoyed a nice walk instead and loved the views here.

Some information about Emerald Lake and the Canadian Rockies: Emerald Lake is one of the most admired spots in Yoho National Park, with an unmatched diversity of both activities and landscapes suited to for any traveler. This beautiful place was discovered in 1882, when famed mountain guide Tom Wilson was led lakeside while rounding up a group of horses that had gone astray, and was immediately taken by the vivid Emerald-coloured waters.

Emerald Lake is part of the Canadian Rockies which are located about 800km (500 miles) east of Vancouver on the border of the province of British Columbia and Alberta. There are 7 National Parks that belong to the Canadian Rockies which strectches out over an area of 25,000 square km (15,625 square miles).

These are the National Parks that belong to the Canadian Rocky Mountains: Mount Revelstoke National Park, Glacier National Park, Kootenay National Park and Yoho National Park which are located in British Columbia and there is Banff National Park, Jasper National Park and Waterton Lakes National Park which are located in Alberta. This amazing area is known for its beautiful blue-green lakes surrounded by mountains, glaciers, rivers, waterfalls and a diversity of wildlife. One can enjoy the endless views and there is a great variety on walking/hiking trails for everybody to enjoy.

You might wonder how these lakes have such a colours. Well, here's a short explanation for that: These lakes are can thank their brilliant blue-green colour to the light filtering effect of rock flour (a powdery substance that the glaciers grind off the mountain rocks) in the glacial runoff (meltwater). The rock flour that is suspended in the water filters out much of the light spectrum except for blues and greens leaving this remarkable turquoise blue color.

The rock flour might also leave that milky look to the water. That's why each lake looks different and each lake might look different on the same day. For example, on a calm morning or evening, the lake might look like a mirror and the colours is barely visible. But on other times of the day the lake is blue. It all depends on the weather conditions and how much rock flour is present in the water.

"A rolling stone gathers no moss."

I've interpreted that proverb to mean that it's good to go out and explore, and to not be held back by the things that can inhibit you. Keep moving and progressing.

Reading on phrases.org.uk it says the original meaning is:

"Someone who does not settle in one place rarely prospers.

...A 'rolling stone' refers to a wanderer, unable to settle to any job or lifestyle and therefore characterised as unreliable and unproductive."

Is it just me, or have times changed?

About this photo: My first photo outing of December was yesterday! In the beginning of December I couldn’t get out of my back alley due to a lot of snow and my low car, then we all got a bad cold and after that we got another big dump of snow and I was stuck again. I did enjoy taking some snow/winter photos in my neighbourhood when possible.

The snow has been melting away since Christmas and is just about gone now. We had so much rain since Christmas as well, so finally today was a decent day to go somewhere for sunset/evening shots. The clouds sure coloured pretty just before sunset and that's when I took this photo last evening from Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Some information about Vancouver: Vancouver is known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Vancouver is Canada's third largest city and is located by the Pacific Ocean on a peninsula surrounded by water and in the distance there are the mountains. Vancouver is considered a pretty clean and safe city with a great variety of shops, museums, theatre, outdoor activities (hiking, walking, kayaking, sailing, skiing on the local mountains in the winter) and more. Walking around Stanley Park is a favourite thing to do for tourist and locals alike. This beautiful park extends from the city centre of Vancouver almost to the North Shore. With wonderful views of the mountains and the ocean around every corner, downtown Vancouver is one of the most picturesque cities in the world. Walk along Robson Street, the most popular shopping street. Experience Chinatown with the different kinds of building and stores, walk on the beaches of English Bay and the seawall of Stanley Park, enjoy a walk in Gastown with the old steam clock and the many gift shops.

Look out for some Hollywood film sets as Vancouver is used for many big Hollywood movies and shows. That's why you might hear that Vancouver is called "Hollywood North". Here are some examples of shows and movies that were/are filmed here: "Deadpool 1 & 2", "The X-Files", "The Good Doctor", "Colony", "Arrow", "The Flash", "Supernatural", "Stargate-SG1", "The 6th Day", "Kiss of the Dragon", "Small Ville" and many many more. Then there is also the Canada Place, the stadiums, the Harbour Lookout, the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, Science World, the Vancouver Art Gallery and much more! All of these attractions are located within minutes from the city centre.

Vancouver is also popular in the winter for winter activities. There are 3 local mountains where you can do any type of winter sport. There is Grouse Mountain, most famous for it's stunning views over the city and fresh powder snow. Grouse Mountain is accessible by skyride...this is a big gondola that will take you up to the top of the mountain. Mount Seymour and Cypress Mountain are famous too and you also get wonderful views from the top of these mountains. As you can see...Vancouver has lots to offer. The Winter Olympics were held here in 2010 as well.

A beautiful Japanese Maple tree at Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

About this photo: We've been having rainy days, so I haven't been out and about with my camera as much. A few days ago it was dry in the morning, so I decided I had to go find some fall colour scenes. I ended up going to Queen Elizabeth Park which is a beautiful park with several gardens to enjoy as well as great view of downtown Vancouver and the mountains. As I am wondering through the garden I spotted this beautiful Japanese Maple Tree dressed in full fall colours, so beautiful. What a feast to the eyes to see!

Some information about Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver: There's a reason Queen Elizabeth Park is one of the most frequented spots for wedding pictures in Vancouver: it's flat-out stunning. With its gorgeously-landscaped quarry gardens, fabulous scenic vistas and 1,500-tree arboretum, the park is a world-class public space and one of the most beautiful places in the city.

Perched atop Vancouver's highest point and covering 130 acres (52.78 hectares), Queen Elizabeth Park is second only to Stanley Park in popularity and annual visitors. At its peak is the park's plaza, a paved area with panoramic views of downtown Vancouver, a courtyard of dancing fountains and the Bloedel Floral Conservatory, home to tropical plants galore and 100 birds of various species.

From the plaza, visitors can follow the winding paths down to the quarry gardens, ponds, lawns, and arboretum. The two quarry gardens are horticultural delights, with pathways and little bridges and mini waterfalls set amongst hundreds of plants and flowers. Private spaces for rest and contemplation are easy to find, and the plentiful trees--over 3,000 throughout the park--provide shade in summer and abundant color in fall.

Sports activities at the park include the Queen Elizabeth Pitch & Putt golf course, Tai Chi in the morning atop the plaza, lawn bowling, and 18 free tennis courts that are first-come, first-serve.

A large chunk from the surrounding cliffs broken off with many fossils visible.

The Muir Creek fossil beds are our window into the ancient past, in fact somewhere between 20 to 25 million years. They are the remnants of plants and animals that tell us what life was like on earth long before man was around to keep records. The Sooke Formation (early Neogene) is the youngest of the Tertiary sediments, called the Carmanah Group that make up the south west coast of Vancouver Island.

Muir Creek has mainly fossils of shellfish which most have been preserved with their original shells (made of a mineral called calcite) in layers of sandstone and conglomerate. The pounding ocean surf continually exposes more of the fossils. You may also be lucky to find carbon imprints of leaves and branches. Look at the many layers in the cliffs, each layer represents deposits from a different time period. One could spend hours and hours here looking up and down the layers finding the different shells.

After hiking for 2km and going up and down the 336 stairs, this is the view that you see at the end of the trail for Schooner Cove.

Along the way there are many large trees and fungi to have a look at, it is not a marathon to get there.

The trail is mainly boardwalk along with the stairs - very pretty walk in as the stairs and boardwalks are moss covered in areas as they wander through the rainforest and over streams.
