A car's taillights bathed the foreground in red light during this nighttime capture at Balanced Rock.

These dead thistles seem to be a favourite perching spot for the local Black-shouldered Kites around Avalon.

Been a while since I took an afternoon view of this iconic spot in Utah ... usually take in the very early morning or night. But having my daughter and her boyfriend along for this portion of our trip it was fun to explore around this landscape feature in the daytime.

Located almost in the middle of the small park, the Balanced Rock Trail takes visitors on a short loop hike up to, and around, the Balanced Rock, an easily recognizable landmark of Arches National Park.

Balanced Rock appears to be precariously perched on its pedestal. The red sandstone landform has eroded over millions of years

The total height of Balanced Rock is about 128 feet, with the balancing rock rising 55 feet above the base. The big rock on top is the size of three school buses. Until recently, Balanced Rock had a companion - a similar, but much smaller balanced rock named "Chip Off The Old Block", which fell during the winter of 1975/1976.

St.Aldhelms Head, landscape view of previous shot a very rugged part of the Jurassic coast in Dorset, this monolith was made by the quarry men who worked this quarry and dates back to Victorian times , its a massive shear drop with amazing views

On this night by the time we got over to Balanced Rock, clouds started to move in. Light from Moab on them added to the mood.

Those delicious-looking hemp & chocolate cookies (with maca root) would bring a smile to Cookie Monster's face.

At this time the quarter moon was still in the sky allowing for some light there on the Utah landscape captured here about two hours before sunrise. The Milky Way was pretty there against that backdrop as well.

A female Northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) perches on an arm of a garden ornament. While I would think birds would be familiar with branches that move when they land, the movement of this sculpture seems more confusing to them.

This photo of a male Goldfinch was taken at a small private refuge of gorgeous flowers, lots of honey bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, finches and an occasional bunny.

The American Goldfinch was designated as the Washington State Bird in 1951. This beautiful golden bird is found throughout the state.

Dandelions, sunflowers and especially thistles, are his preferred food - hence the scientific name Carduelis, from the Latin carduus, a thistle. And that’s why the Distelfink is a symbol for the Pennsylvania Dutch, featured in their folk art, embodying good fortune, happiness, and wishes for prosperity. The name "distelfink" originates from the Pennsylvania German word for "thistle finch.”

Yesterday we had a brilliant day walking at Belstone Tor, northern Dartmoor. This area is just half an hour from our house so we go there quite often. This peculiar rock formation is a logan stone which sits just next to an ancient stone wall called the 'Irishman's Wall'. In the background there's splendid views over Devon and Belstone Tor. It was an interesting morning in terms of the weather with dark clouds quickly passing to let the warm sunshine through for most of the day. I took this photo literally sprinting from the rocks in the distance where we had one of our picnics (3 in total that morning) to catch a bit of the darkness in the sky and the sunlit rocks in the foreground. I met a nice chap from Wales who walked the area making a Youtube video of his adventures. Sadly I could not remember the channel's name but I'm sure he got some good footage for his stream that day!

The biggest surprise that morning was our 3 year old who walked the entire 6k circular walk on his own!!!! Absolutely amazing!
