In 1970, Iran laid claim to Bahrain and the other Persian Gulf islands. However, in an agreement with the United Kingdom it agreed "not to pursue" its claims on Bahrain if its other claims were realized. The following plebiscite saw Bahrainis confirm their Arab identity and independence from Britain. Bahrain to this day remains a member of the Arab League and Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf. The British withdrew from Bahrain on 16 December 1971, making Bahrain an independent emirate.

The trial of 25 key-ring leaders of an all-Shiite alleged terror group that the authorities in Bahrain accuse of conspiring to overthrow the regime continued on 25 November 2010 with the authorities barring scores of international observers, foreign media, and relatives from monitoring the case proceedings inside the court room. The authorities also carried out an arrest of a female relative of a detainee after she insisted on gaining access to the hearing, others were left on the sidewalk or inside near by coffee-shops. One nice thing in traveling across the globe is the layovers, if you get a chance to get out and visit the place. This was taken during one such layovers in Bahrain (12 hours!).

In 2006, just before I started my first "real" job, we went on a trip to the Middle-East: Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, back to the Emirates, to Oman and back to the Emirates.

I went with a Dutch friend from school with Moroccan roots and who could speak Arabic and another Dutch friend that I met during an internship in South-Africa in 2003.

At that time, tourism wasn't that big in these countries. What I can remember is that the flight was around €500. We flew on a old ass Alitalia B767: Amsterdam - Rome - Dubai.

Air Arabia: Dubai - Bahrain was €40. Al Jazeera Airlines: Bahrain to Kuwait was €40 and €50 back to Dubai. We rented a car in Bahrain and Emirates and drove to Oman.

I believe this was a Friday and Friday is a non-working day in Bahrain. Every one was out in the desert and just chilling. Bahrain is not that big. About 50x15 km.
