Jay and I were in Bahrain for two and a half years while I was teaching at the Bahraini Air Force. I arrived in January of 1989 and we ventured onward to Dubai in the middle of 1991. We lived in several locations during our time on the island.

Today one of our Saudi agents for the show took us to the Bahrain Fort. The site is believed to have been constructed around 2800 BC, and is subsequently overlaid by various fortified settlements. The last was built during the 16th century to defend recent acquisition of Portugal. The Bahrain Fort is also known as the Portuguese Fort, due to this reason.

This is the front and back of a small leather bound photo album - note the spelling of "Bahrein" - I recall that this spelling and "Bahrain" were both used at the time - today the Bahrain spelling prevails..........

Sheikh isa Bin Ali Al Khalifa House is located in the center of the old capital of Bahrain (Muharraq City). It was built at the end of the 18th century by Sheikh Hassan Bin Abdulla Ahmed Al Fateh during the rule of his father, Sheikh Abdulla Bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa. The house is characterized by its huge walls and small doors designed to protect them from the heat in summer and the severe cold in winter. www.bahraintourism.com/

Das Bahrain World Trade Center, kurz BWTC, ist ein Gebäude in Bahrains Hauptstadt Manama. Es besteht aus zwei Haupttürmen, die mittels drei Querstreben miteinander verbunden sind. Jedes der beiden segelförmigen Gebäude erreicht eine Höhe von 240 Metern bei 50 Stockwerken (davon 34 für Büros). Unter dem Gebäude befindet sich eine Einkaufshalle. Qal`at al-Bahrain is an archaeological site located in Bahrain. It is composed of an artificial mound created by human inhabitants from 2300 BC up to the 1700's. Among other things, it was once the capital of the Dilmun civilization, and served more recently as a Portuguese fort. For these reasons, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.
Qal`at al-Bahrain is a typical tell – an artificial mound created by many successive layers of human occupation. The strata of the 300x600-metre tell testify to continuous human presence from about 2300 B.C. to the 16th century A.D. About 25% of the site has been excavated revealing structures of different types: residential, public, commercial, religious and military. They testify to the importance of the site as a trading port over the centuries.
On the top of the 12m high mound, there is the impressive Qal`at al-Burtughal (Portuguese fort), which gave the whole site its name, qal`a, meaning fort. The site was the capital of the Dilmun, one of the most important ancient civilizations of the region. It contains the richest remains inventoried of this civilization, which was hitherto only known from written Sumerian references.

The name "Bahrain" means "Two Seas" referring to the salty and fresh water "seas" surrounding the islands.
