Last year I was one of a group of Dutch LEGO builders to attend Modelworld Europe. a Dutch show for models of earth-moving equipment and special transport. Last year I built a truck for the event.
I am going again this year and I will be taking the truck and the backhoe loader I built for it with me, but because I always like to have something to display and also because I like a bit of variety in my building now and then, I've decided to build a crane. It will be on the same scale as most of my other vehicles. The event is at the end of March, so it doesn't leave me a lot of time, but with a bit of luck I'll manage.

Joseph Cyril Bamford was the founder of the JCB company, manufacturing heavy plant, born in Uttoxeter in 1916 into the family who owned Bamfords International Farm Machinery one of the country's major agricultural equipment suppliers, business established by his Grandfather Henry Bamford.
He joined the Alfred Herbert company in Coventry, then the UK's largest machine-tool manufacturer, and rose to represent the firm in Ghana. Returning home in 1938 to breifly join the family firm, he joined the RAF in 1941 working in supply and logistics, he returned to the African Gold Coast, to run a staging post for USAF planes being ferried to the Middle East. Postwar he worked at English Electric (Stafford) developing electric welding equipment, a short return to the family firm resulted in his dismissal with his Uncle stating Joey had "little future ahead of him." He sold Brylcreem for a short time, during which time he rented a small garage for £ 1-50p a week (30 shillings) and set about building a farm trailer from scrap steel and war surplus Jeep axles, using a prototype electric welder bought for £2-10s (= £2.50) which he sold for £ 45 along with a cart he had repaired for a further £ 45. From this he established a company bearing his own initials and re-invested. JCB grew and grew to become a market leader, introducing Europes first hydraulic tipping trailer in 1948, a move to an old cheese factory in nearby Rocester in 1950 the company workforce now totalling six. In 1951 JCB adapted their now standard yellow livery, in 1953 came the break through backhoe loader, 1957 the "hydra-digga", incorporating the excavator and the major loader as a single all-purpose tool, in 1991 the JCB Fastrac high speed agricultural tractor.
JCB won seven Queen's Awards for Exports as its sales spread to more than 130 countries around the globe, while Bamford himself was appointed a CBE for Services to Export in 1969. He retired from the business in 1975, handed over the business to their two sons. In 1989 he was awarded the honorary degree of a Doctor of Technology from both Loughborough University and in 2000 Keele University
At his death, JCB was the largest privately owned engineering company in Britain, employing 4,500 people and manufacturing 30,000 machines a year in 12 factories on three continents. It had revenues of £850m in 1999, the Rocester site remains the flagship works, surrounded by 10,000 acres (40 km2) of landscaped grounds and lakes

Caterpillar backhoe loader has always been on my to do list, as it is quite similar machine to tractors. Biggest challenge was to find the proper element for the rear mudguards and when I finally found it rest of a model was a piece of cake. Hope you like it!

1978 Massey Ferguson 40 backhoe/loader.
Cheffins vintage and classic auction, Sutton -
"Fitted with new rear tyres, new power steering pump, loader rams resealed and a selection of ditching and digging buckets."
Sold for £2800.
The large-scale model has more functionality and a more accurate representation of the mechanisms of both the front loader and the rear excavator arm. In terms of overall looks and details, however, the small one isn't all that far behind.
Whenever I start a build, I have a little wish list (if I were selling these instead of being my own 'customer', I'd call it a design brief). I wanted a (mostly) studless minifgure scale JCB backhoe loader, suitable for a diorama or as the load for one of my trucks, with a cabin large enough to house an operator, a functional front bucket and some freedom of movement for the rear excavator arm.

The front loader is articulated. Sometimes the best way to make a model look like the real deal is to make it work like the real deal. This applies to the landing gears of the aircraft I build, but I also applied it to this model.
In addition to folding/ extending and whatnot, the mount point for the excavator arm can slide from side-to-side.

The British use the word 'JCB' for a backhoe loader like many Americans use 'Xerox' when they mean a photo-copier. My model represents an actual JCB, a JCB 3CX to be precise.
I also spent a fair bit of time to make the rear excavator arm properly articulated. Unfortunately the small pneumatic cylinder that holds the arm up doesn't allow a lot of travel, so the arm cannot be lowered more than is visible here. Still, it looks good!
Here is where this thing got complicated. I wasn't happy to just have a little 'glass' house sitting at the back of this thing. I felt it needed doors. Unfortunately the doors on a vehicle like this swing open over the mudguards towards the rear. Making that it all fit took several hours of fiddling.
J.C. Bamford Excavators Ltd, or JCB for short, is famous for its range of distinctive yellow backhoe loaders, excavators and tractors. The company was founded by Joseph Cyril Bamford, hence the name JCB and their main factory is located in Rocester, Staffordshire. Here we see a ERF EC10 6x2 articulated low-loader owned by JCB and used for transporting the range of JCB equipment around the country for demonstration purposes. The piece of equipment carried here is a JCB Fastrac. Notice the registration 8 JCB.
