The summer MOW season is in full swing along the Ottumwa Sub as BNSF M OTMOTM6 06T rolls west through the crossovers at Beckwith, Iowa behind an ES44DC, passing a sand train holding back at the signal. The crew is heading back towards Ottumwa after a day of dropping ties along the main using the two backhoe loaders sitting in the cars at the head end.

A backhoe loader, also called a loader backhoe, loader excavator, tractor excavator, digger or colloquially shortened to backhoe within the industry, is a heavy equipment vehicle that consists of a tractor-like unit fitted with a loader-style shovel/bucket on the front and a backhoe on the back. Due to its (relatively) small size and versatility, backhoe loaders are very common in urban engineering and small construction projects (such as building a small house, fixing urban roads, etc.) as well as developing countries. This type of machine is similar to and derived from what is now known as a TLB (Tractor-Loader-Backhoe), which is to say, an agricultural tractor fitted with a front loader and rear backhoe attachment.
The true development of the backhoe actually began in 1947 by the inventors that started the Wain-Roy Corporation of Hubbardston, Massachusetts. In 1947 Wain-Roy Corporation developed and tested the first actual backhoes. In April 1948 Wain-Roy Corporation sold the first all-hydraulic backhoes, mounted to a Ford Model 8N

A nice rusty JCB 3C Backhoe Loader, it might be rusty but its still in use, it sits here on what was the trackbed at the old Kirkby Stephen East Station, a footbridge which once crossed the lines can be seen in the background.
Shot taken for Saturday Self Challenge 24/08/2024 -- Mechanism
One idea was the bike chain , pedals and gears but that fell at the first hurdle with the shot just to jumbled to see what was going on clearly . However , a random trip down to the shops presented me with this scene in the middle of some 3 - Way traffic lights while big holes were being made in the road at a junction . I hope this will classify as a mechanism suitable for the challenge . It was last Sunday so all the equipment was stowed for the weekend and this was the only view available with the barriers all around the equipment . What we have here is a mini mechanical digger in the form of a Back Actor , ie. it draws the bucket towards itself as it digs . What we can see here for the challenge is the three hydraulic rams which will power and operate the arms and bucket to excavate the required area . Also visible but very obscured by the barriers is another mechanism which works in a totally different way , that is the caterpillar tracks for moving the digger about over uneven and muddy ground which most building sites and roadworks usually are . Therefore , we have two types of mechanisms in one capture for the challenge .
( description from Wikipedia and biased to US terms ) - A backhoe—also called rear actor or back actor—is a type of excavating equipment, or excavator, consisting of a digging bucket on the end of a two-part articulated arm. It is typically mounted on the back of a tractor or front loader, the latter forming a "backhoe loader" (a US term, but known as a "JCB" in Ireland and the UK). The section of the arm closest to the vehicle is known as the boom, while the section that carries the bucket is known as the dipper (or dipper-stick), both terms derived from steam shovels. The boom, which is the long piece of the backhoe arm attached to the tractor through a pivot called the king-post, is located closest to the cab. It allows the arm to pivot left and right, typically through a range of 180 to 200 degrees, and also enables lifting and lowering movements. ( to me JCB is just a company that makes heavy duty equipment )

Work is being done at the Point No Point Lighthouse to rebuild the retention wall. There was a backhoe loader parked on the sand in front of the Lighthouse Keepers quarters when I was setting up the camera. It swung into action about the same time that I opened the lens. If you look at bottom right section of the tree there’s a section that looks like a right angle of light, that’s where the backhoe was located, it’s invisible. The photo is on direct positive paper that was developed in camera using Eco Pro developer and fixer.
« Là ce n’est plus de la lévitation sociale, c’est de l’apesanteur cosmique : rien ne nous tient, rien ne nous retient, rien n’est relié à nous et nous ne sommes reliés à rien. C’est une situation qui a beaucoup d’inconvénients évidents mais qui possède également beaucoup d’avantages que la plupart des gens n’osent pas imaginer. » (J.V.)

This colorful parking spot is on HY 209, just past the intersection with the Woods Mountain Road, Since this was taken back in July of 2003, the large patch of Lupines has disappeared. This area is at the lowest point in the bend where the road crosses the Fox River. It might be that an extremely high storm-driven tide flooded this location, poisoning the soil with salt, killing off the Lupines. This has happened to one of our favorite Lupine covered areas behind the barrier beach at Advocate. A high storm tide "erased" the Lupines.

This picture was shot on a tripod with five exposures (-4..-2..0..+2..+4EV). I used Photomatix to create the HDR with tone mapping and detail enhanced. I increased the overall saturation with Hue/Saturation in Photoshop. 1 layer mask to increase color and contrast in the afternoon sky. Curve adjustment to increase the overall contrast. Some dodging and burning to bring out details. Used Nik Sharpener Pro to sharpen image.
I was just driving home and saw this looong vacant lot suddenly being excavated for a new home construction. Presented in full HDR!

Usually, I plan my builds a long time in advance, but every once in a while, I build something on a whim. This is one of those times. I very much enjoyed building my tractors and felt like building something similar. I'll also be attending a show for models of cranes, heavy haulage and earth moving equipment in March. Hence, this JCB backhoe loader.
Caterpillar backhoe loader has always been on my to do list, as it is quite similar machine to tractors. Biggest challenge was to find the proper element for the rear mudguards and when I finally found it rest of a model was a piece of cake. Hope you like it!
