I love the rain. I was born on Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver where it rains a lot. So when I saw “Rain in the Creek”, a painting by Roberts Creek artist Roger Handling posted on Instagram, I felt that same feeling of joy that some of us feel in a downpour. When I collected my photos of Rain in the Creek, it was clear that many xwasem Creekers didn’t see rain as a barrier to having a delightful time.
We live in a rain forest and the rain inspires us to write poems, paint paintings, write songs, sing songs, dance on the mandala, take photos, go for a hike, a run, a bike ride, go stream watching, play music, operate a backhoe to clear ditches, fix a powerline, attend an event, or get cozy at home. After a xwesam winter rain, the many creeks that flow down the slopes of Mount Elphinstone get full, flood across the Highway, Lower Road, and adjacent properties.
November is always one of the rainiest of months. In 1983 the Clough Creek flooded and left debris all over Orange Road and spread uprooted stumps and forest rubble down the mountain to the sea. The creeks are always full in November when the rains come but in October 2021 we were visited by an atmospheric river - a deluge that dumps from the heavens like a flooding river.
RAIN IN THE CREEK falls all year long. Sometimes gentle, sometimes aggressive, the rains have attended many of our events: Roberts Creek Daze, Mount Elphinstone Forest Walks, Halloween, school bus lineups, playing music with a band, stormy highway road trips, Earth Days, Maypole Dancing and Gumboot Games, Celebration of Life at the end of the Pier, and the Picnic Table Gumboot Flag Propane Tank protest.
Here’s to the rain that has kept our forests green, our creeks full.
