Working with my new Canon 5d (used but new to me). I shot this model with my new (and purchased new) DS Arms SA58 carbine.
It was my first experiment with Alien Bees ABR800 and a backdrop.

They had a backdrop of Shuri Castle set up throughout the festival, which I thought was fantastic. Yes, it's blatantly two-dimensional, and yes, it's quite cartoony (look particularly at the dragon heads), and yes, it's true that the scale or perspective is wrong to give the true, realistic impression as if they were performing in front of the real Shuri Castle.
But even so, despite all of that, this had a huge invaluable effect on creating the right mood and atmosphere for the performances, and making it all seem that much less amateurish and that much more genuine and authentic.
It brought you into the mood of thinking you'd been transported to Okinawa... makes you forget where you are.
And, besides, I just think it's extremely well done. I like the cartoon dragons. They're cute. And the architectural details and such are of course done expertly; it's immediately recognizable and unmistakable.
