image of the day and a quick test of my new portable backdrop. very slight adjustment to the brightness and contrast gives a perfect black (i.e. 0, 0, 0, 255) across the board. just need to sort out my lighting now (oh and tidy myself up a bit!)

i somehow found this scene pathetic. Here, local fisherfolk on the Mandovi river gather shells and crabs against the backdrop of one of those eyesore casino ships. This is just it- never mind poor fisherfolk. Although several of these abonimable eyesores are now dotting the Mandovi riverfront in Panjim, these boats are of outsiders, by outsiders and for outsiders. Not one of the local Goans I spoke to wanted them. Even taking a nice boat ride on the Mandovi river is now no fun at all- you now have huge ships of almost ocean liner size offering your river cruises, each one with a capacity of at least 200 pax with a tout on the street urging to you join a cruise. Go on one and be herded like cattle along with 200 others? Sorry, count me out. The only saving grace is, with such massive vessels and once the initial euphoria wears out, hopefully some of these eyesores- including the cruise liner sized river cruises- would soon be eased out by pure economics. (at least that's what some of the old time locals I spoke to feel). (Goa India, Nov/ Dec. 2022)
