This Woodpecker was formerly called the Arctic Woodpecker or Black-backed Three-toed Woodpecker. It does have only three toes which is a characteristic it shares with the American Three-toed Woodpecker (Picoides dorsalis) which can also be found here. This one is a female. I added a recent shot of a male in the first comment box for comparison. Note the yellow crown.
This species eats mainly wood-boring insects which it obtains by scaling bark from trees to expose the holes created by those insects. If you look to the left of the bird, you can see the exposed boring holes in the area where the bark was removed. The Woodpecker inserts its long barbed tongue to extract a meal.
We usually find these ones by listening for the irregular tapping and tearing sounds created by the scaling activity. Falling bark chips are also a good tell.

The avian flu is back in our area, so the zoo has decided to shelter many of its birds indoors. Jack, the black swan, along with barnyard birds and penguins, are included in the population deemed most vulnerable.

One of the 18 Jubilees transferred to 17B Burton shed in November 1961 was 45585 Hyderabad. Looking at the external condition it seems likely that this was one that spent most of the time at Burton stored out of use. The winter of 1962/63 saw several stored locos brought back into action and here 45585 heads 3V20, the Derby to Bristol Parcels past the long closed platforms at Branston.
Despite the terrible external condition the loco seems in good mechanical order with a complete lack of leaking steam. Maybe the reason it was transferred to Derby shed in January 1963.

Fall Break 2014: "Turtles & Lava"
November 1: Hawaii to Arizona, a long day's journey into another day; reacquainting with the desert.
The marbled whites are back on the meadow at our local golf course. I had been there two weeks ago and at the time didn't find a single one. Today I went there again during my lunch break and there were hundreds of them. It was hot and sticky, almost like in a glasshouse, but I just had to sit down in the grass and watch the marbled whites taking turns on the flowers around me.

I've taken 1 or 2 photos like this before but only by chance.
While I was photographing the side and front shots of this little fella, I remembered about the back of the head shots from before, so I set myself up to do a deliberate shoot of it.

After a busy morning in Glasgow I arrived back home and as the weather was also lovely and sunny, as it was this morning, I took a walk along the beach!

Just a few minutes back yard shots. Distant sparrows and a few gulls were all that obliged. This one has the characteristic red eye circle but can't tell if it's a Great or Lesser.
Swainson's Hawks migrate from South America to North American grasslands and the west.

After languishing a couple years out of service at Huron with a broken crank reportedly the 401 was put back together and made serviceable in the late 70's. It like the rest of the C425's was filthy and it ran around that way until Huron painted the C425's and there BU companions in late 1980. The 401 looking better than it has in years sits at Waseca on January 3, 1981. No photographer to credit on this one, Chuck Schwesinger collection.
