Members of the Brazilian marine corps Special Operations Battalion (Tonelero) prepare to conduct over-the-beach movement in order to seize a high-value target during a joint combined exchange training exercise May 12, 2010, in Brazil. The course was taught by U.S. Navy SEALs with amphibious assault expertise and special warfare combatant-craft crewmen.

Raising the self-esteem of our children is an important aim for us at Hummingbird and is usually accomplished through the children's regular participation in the artistic, cultural and sporting activities offered at our community prevention centres. Preventing kids from hitting the streets, drugs and crime is our main objective.
Living together for the entire weekend at our new home near the coast offers the children a unique opportunity and some very special moments; experiences they will probably cherish for the rest of their lives. The sheer beauty and aesthetics of our new home also plays an important role in raising the self-esteem of almost any underprivileged child who is fortunate enough to spend time there.
Last weekend's living-in experience was reserved for girls only and for most of them it was the first time spending nights away from home. Different to the boys of their age, our girls are extremely concerned about their appearance and personal aesthetics. It was therefore no surprise to me that they would enjoy to the full, the participation of our friend and neighbour, Andrea, who works as a beautician. Andrea spent the entire Saturday afternoon together with Ordalina, our artist and hairdresser, preparing the girls for an evening out to our local town, where they proudly paraded some of the qualities that make Brazilian girls become some of the most attractive women in the world.
Suellen comes from our Sítio Joaninha Community Prevention Centre, here photographed after her little beauty session with Andrea and Ordalina at Hummingbird House.
A passenger waits the time of the departure of a speedboat during the early hours of the morning in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, on September 19, 2020. River transport in the state of Amazonas, which was suspended in March shortly after the first Covid-19 cases in the state, restarted its activities on July 16, with a series of safety protocols: social distance, adherence to personal hygiene procedures and passenger capacity limitation of 40%, for ferry boats and motor ships, and 60%, for speedboats. In the vessels there is also the demarcation of seats, a distance of 2 meters between nets and mandatory use of masks by everyone when entering ports and boats, and during the entire trip.
Passengers or crew members who show suspicious symptoms during the trip must disembark at the nearest port in order to guarantee adequate medical care. In addition, specific seats must be defined for boarding passengers in the risk group. Photo: IMF / Raphael AlvesIMF/ Raphael Alves
There were the wetsuits hung out to dry in front of each house. And the lack of shoes when walking down the gravely roads. And the quiet, laid-back atmosphere of the streets. It was clear I had arrived in a serious surf town.
A week prior, I had never heard of this tiny town that sits on the Atlantic in southern Brazil. Had I been a surfer, I certainly would have. The inconspicuous area is the site of several international surf tournaments. But not just that; like nearly all of the coastal places in Brazil, the beach is a way of life. It's the place where you meet familiar and unfamiliar faces. The sun and surf are the forces reassuring you that life is good.

Plenty of Brazilians had made their way to London to soak up the atmosphere, including these two fans who were rooting for the Brazil women's team, complete with flag. They were passionate and happy!

This is the last shot of Vitória Barros photoshoot, hope you like! She's dressed with a beautiful lolita dress and it's more lovely than her in other costumes. She's 20, studies social communication at UFMG and lives in Belo Horizonte.

Brazil and Chile played a football (soccer) game in Gothenburg on March 24th 2007. I'm not interested in sports but I took my camera out and went to the stadium before the game to shoot supporters. Happy friendly people everywhere and there was a jolly good atmosphere. There are many Chileans living in Sweden so the Chilean fans totally outnumbered the Brazilian ones. However Brazil won, 4-0.
It was a lot of fun and it was a wonderful spring afternoon, sunshine and 16 degrees (61F).
