Despite its name, the Brazilian Tanager is not, quite, endemic to the lowlands of the Atlantic Forest biome of eastern Brazil, being also found in extreme northeast Argentina. Males are impossible mistake, being brilliant scarlet-red with a black tail and wings, and a very obviously pale mandible to the bill. Females, on the other hand, are less distinctively plumaged and recall, to some extent, females of other Ramphocelus tanagers, or even some Tachyphonus, but are generally much redder over the underparts than any similar species. There is no known overlap with the congeneric and much more widespread Silver-beaked Tanager (Ramphocelus carbo), which is substantially darker in both sexes than the present species, although the two probably come close in various parts of eastern Brazil. doi.org/10.2173/bow.bratan1.01

It regularly visits feeders in small numbers. Both sexes of this hummingbird are attractive and distinctive. This is a male photographed at Macuquinho Lodge with a native bromeliad flower.

At three times the size of Niagara waterfalls, there's water, water and more water once you enter the Iguacu National Park. A ramp over the Iguacu river takes you close to the Devil's throat, the biggest waterfall at Iguacu.

We were surprised to spot this tapir on the riverbank. Even more startled than we were, he turned to run, then paused to face us before disappearing into the brush.

Tapirs are large plant-eating animals of Central and South America, and Southeast Asia. There are four types: Brazilian, Malayan, Baird's, and mountain tapirs. They have a long, flexible snout to grab leaves and fruit, and are related to horses and rhinos. Tapirs are great swimmers and use water to escape danger or cool off. They are usually shy, active at night, and prefer to live alone. Sadly, all tapir species are endangered due to habitat loss and hunting.
