Serra da Canastra National Park, in the southeast of Minas Gerais, was created in 1972 to protect the spring waters of the São Francisco River, one of Brazil's largest rivers which runs 2900 km to end in the Atlantic Ocean in the North-East of the country. The park has an area of approximately 2000 square kilometers and is covered in typical cerrado savannah-like vegetation. At the edge of the park, on the Canastra mountain range, the São Francisco river has its first waterfall with a drop of around 200 meters. Due to its unique location on the transition between the Savannah and the Atlantic Forest, the park has a rich flora and fauna with several endemic species.
