The Brazilica Festival is the largest celebration of Brazilian culture in the United Kingdom that has been held annually in Liverpool, England since July 2008. It is produced by the Liverpool Carnival Company, an organisation that has operated as a registered charity since 2007. The festival began during Liverpool's reign as European Capital of Culture in 2008 when a Rio-style Carnival Parade swept through the streets of the city. In its current format, the festival consists of a week-long celebration of Brazilian culture including music, art, food, film and dance events that take place at indoor venues across the city which build up to an outdoor city centre carnival street party that takes place in Williamson Square and samba carnival parade.
The Liverpool Samba School was set up by husband and wife creative team Roger and Maeve Morris in 1995. The school performed at the Rio Carnival in 2000 and wanted to bring a touch of the Carnival's magic to streets in their own city. In 2007, the creative team established the Liverpool Carnival Company with an aim of delivering a Carnival event the following year.

Brazilian military police patrol after entering the unpacified Complexo da Mare, one of the largest 'favela' complexes in Rio, on March 30, 2014 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Brazilian government has deployed federal forces to occupy the group of violence-plagued slums ahead of the June 12 start of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The group of 16 communities house around 130,000 residents and have been dominated by drug gangs and militias. Mare is located close to Rio's international airport and has been mentioned as a likely pacification target for the police amid the city's efforts to improve security ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
This was once Amazon rain forest. The area now looks more like the Great Plains of the US. Most of the land is detimbered for farming and live stock grazing. People gotta eat right? Obviously there have been many environmental and habitat changes due to the massive deforestation. There are programs in the area to help regrow the rainforest through seed banks, and an effort to make land/habitat conservation a source of monetary revenue.

It was April, early fall in Brazil, tho still in the high 80's. Plenty warm to northern Californians, but we saw tourists in Paraty in heavy hoodies and sweaters. Most didn't want to sit outside. Too chilly.
