The Heart Theatre is an early example of the repurposing of an existing building. It was built in 1941 inside what used to be a garage in the town of Effingham, Illinois.

The theatre is closed and unoccupied at the moment, but the marquee studded with hundreds of light bulbs, neon tubes, and chromed letters atop an eye-catching red field, still stands proudly. The cream terra cotta tiling is slightly battered, but still largely intact and quite lovely. The handles on the doors are unusual, and very much in keeping with it's Streamline Moderne design.

I was there early in the morning, and the light from the rising sun scattered brilliantly off of the chrome and glass and making the structural glass block that runs up the facade in columns seem lit from within.

Plaque: The Lyric Theatre - Home of the Tupelo Community Theatre. The Lyric Theatre was built in 1912 by Mr. R.F. Goodlett. Originally named The Comus, it hosted live vaudeville shows. In the 1930's it became a part of the Malco chain of movie houses and the name was changed to the Lyric Theatre. Its sturdy brick walls made the Lyric one of the few buildings to escape the fury of the 1936 tornado. A popular local legend tells that Elvis "stole" his first kiss in the balcony of the Lyric.

Sixteen visionary leaders founded Tupelo Community Theatre in the spring of 1969 when they formed an organization to "develop, promote, teach and stimulate interest in the dramatic arts." Those charter board members were Marilyn Bank, Sandy Ford, Martha and Rowland Geddie, Martha and Bill Hitch, Jack Kellum, Linda Kinsey, Ruth and Gus Liveakos, Mary Alice McAlister, Margaret Anne Murphey, Jerry Napier, Jean Pettis, Edith Thomas, and Charlotte Westbrook.

In its early years TCT performed in venues all over the city and in a converted church building on East Main Street. In 1984, the Lyric had outlived its usefulness as a movie theatre and TCT purchased the historic theatre and restored it to be its permanent home.

Thank you to the thousands of volunteers and patrons who have contributed to the success of Tupelo Community Theatre.

One of my favorite games in vegas for fun is Roulette. Here at the Mirage Casino, a man waits on the dealer to spin the wheel while he "plays the numbers", or in the case of this particular table has at least 10 1$ chips directly on or riding lines of multiple numbers. If one of his chips is sitting on the number that hits, he will win $35.

While I was watching the roullete tables at the Bellagio, a man came in while the wheel was spinning and stuck a 25$ chip on a number that hit... and yes, he walked away from that table with $900 in one minute! It's just that easy folks ;)

Here the empty seats were a nice invitation, but I did not play.

The Majestic Theater was designed by John Eberson and opened in 1929. It is on the National Register #75001952, and also a National Historic Landmark. It is also part of the San Antonio Downtown and River Walk Historic District which is on the National Register of Historic Places #100002128.

The Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, formerly the Odeon Cinema. Box Office and rewoven 'Odeon' carpet.

The Odeon Cinema opened in March 1936, designed by Cecil Clavering from the Harry Weedon Practise. It was one of the most ornate of the original Odeons, and continued as a single screen cinema until closure in October 1988. After laying largely empty (a social club used the former café area), it was partially restored, partially rebuilt as the Stephen Joseph Theatre (architect Osbourne Christmas), and reopened in 1996. It is grade 2 listed.
