This replica boss was made from paper maché (consisting of tissue paper, glue, whiting and plaster) over a wood and wire frame, and then finished with acrylic paints. It was based on the small scale model or maquette on which a traditional egg tempera has been applied and approximates to the actual size and original colouring of the boss in the centre of the crossing between the transepts. This boss shows a knight and three dragons representing the Christian soul trampling on the world, the flesh and the devil. The armoured knight wears mail and a sword. It dates to about 1300.
A boss is the carved underside of the keystone which locks the vaulting arches in place by small projections of rib. These last have been excluded from the replica for ease of handling. The carved bosses and corbels in Exeter Cathedral are amongst the finest examples of English Decorated Gothic architecture. The largest of these weighs over 2 tons. The subjects of the bosses include human figures, biblical stories, naturalistic and fabulous scenes.
"An armoured horseman attacked by three dragons (blue, green and crimson). The cathedral’s central boss, at the meeting of eight ribs. The horse gallops on a diagonal axis. Diameter 29”, bottom about 15½” below plaster line. Caparison, shield and gown or, a bordure azure: the blue is indigo. (The blazon on the caparison and gown shows that this is not azure an escutcheon or.) Dapple-grey horse, red rein and stirrup-leather, armour evidently tarnished silver leaf. Unexplained shapeless black pigment on part of rump half of caparison.
Prideaux and Shafto sensibly conclude that this boss represents miles Christi: the Christian in combat with the Three Foes (World, Flesh and Devil). It is highly appropriate that the central boss of the whole Cathedral should show this familiar conflict between good and evil. However, Prideaux and Shafto give no contemporary evidence for this assumption. As The Pore Caitif has it: “Alle mannes lyfe vpone erthe ys but fyghthynge and knygthose ayenst gostly enemyes. These enemyes bene the fend, the worlde, and the flessh.” The image of the Christian knight derives from St Paul’s “Put you on the armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil”, with his account of the girdle of truth, breastplate of justice, shoes of the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation and sword of the Spirit “which is the word of God”. The image became remarkably resonant and inclusive. It could represent the individual soul (the knight) and body (his horse),Christ himself,or the Church Militant - or all of these, as fused, for example, in the fourteenth-century figure of Piers Plowman. In at least one case, the armour becomes Christ: the Three Foes are described, and the Christian is advised: Thow go / In to thee feire feld/ And tak vr lord to the scheld. It may also be significant that the red dragon bites the horse’s off fore fetlock, while the blue attacks over the back of the saddle. The rider representing the good man whose horse’s feet are bitten by the powers of evil derives from early commentaries on Gen. xlix 16-17 (“Let Dan be a snake in the way, a serpent in the path, that biteth the horse’s heels that his rider may fall backward”) where the serpent is interpreted as Antichrist."

Cake Boss,” Buddy Valastro, who is himself the Carravaggio of cakes, the DaVinci of desserts — and as good an Italian-American role model as you’ll find on TV. Unlike other reality TV shows, which just show greed, dysfunction and, yes, criminality, “Cake Boss” shows art, family love and fun.
In case you are not yet one of its loyal fans, the show takes place in a bakery in Hoboken that turns out the most spectacular cakes this side of heaven. It’s a wonder to watch Buddy and his staff create cakes that fit what the customer wants — everything from buildings to bling, from garments to gardens.
Buddy, of course, is the cake boss, a man who has single-handedly made “fondant” a household word. (That’s the edible stuff they wrap around cakes, and with which they create shapes like flowers, shoes, you name it.)

I chanced upon Boss Tweed the other day!
William Magear Tweed (April 3, 1823 – April 12, 1878), often erroneously referred to as William "Marcy" Tweed and widely known as "Boss" Tweed, was an American politician most notable for being the political boss of Tammany Hall, the Democratic Party's political machine that played a major role in the politics of 19th-century New York City and state. At the height of his influence, Tweed was the third-largest landowner in New York City, a director of the Erie Railroad, a director of the Tenth National Bank, a director of the New-York Printing Company, the proprietor of the Metropolitan Hotel,a significant stockholder in iron mines and gas companies, a board member of the Harlem Gas Light Company, a board member of the Third Avenue Railway Company, a board member of the Brooklyn Bridge Company, and the president of the Guardian Savings Bank. Tweed was convicted for stealing an amount estimated by an aldermen's committee in 1877 at between $25 million and $45 million from New York City taxpayers from political corruption, but later estimates ranged as high as $200 million. Unable to make bail, he escaped from jail once but was returned to custody. He died in the Ludlow Street Jail.

Akasaka Press Center is located in the center of Tokyo. The Akizuki/Kure area near Hiroshima is an ammunition depot. Yokohama North Dock is a port facility in the city of Yokohama, a major commerce port and a popular shopping area. USAG Torii Station is located 980 miles southwest of Camp Zama on the island of Okinawa.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - The Better Opportunity for Single Service Members (BOSS) organization hosted a competitive dodgeball tournament inside the Price Fitness Center Gymnasium on Aug. 24. The double elimination tournament was won by the appropriately named team Leftovers, who in the end were the last team remaining and left holding the trophy.

So I am looking at leaving work early next week to go back home for the holidays. I have also been in talks with my boss about going home for longer than just the holidays. Obviously it didn't go down too well. But I have a lot going on at home just now and I have a few ideas for 2009 that I want to do. I have agreed to think about things over the weekend and have a chat with coffee next week. So this weekend is my thinking weekend. Choices, choices!
As an early Christmas present though and as a thank you for helping out over the last 4 months I have been giving this cool Nikon FM2 camera. I have had my eye on it for a while and hinted at borrowing it. But today it was given to me. I intend to load some Ilford black and white or some Fuji Velvia into this and enjoy myself.
