Blue Grosbeak - male

Guiraca caerulea

We saw a lot of these beautiful birds during the Delaware Bird-a-Thon, but this one gave me the best looks I've had in a long time.

Ordained priest in Paris in 1685, Jean-Baptiste Labat pursued scientific studies in Nancy.

In 1693, he volunteered and left as a missionary with the authorization of the officials of the Dominican order in the Antilles. On January 29, 1694, he landed in Martinique. He joined his fathers in the parish of Macouba, where he worked for two years to develop the parish and built many buildings. In 1696, he traveled to Guadeloupe and Dominica then was appointed syndical prosecutor of the American islands on his return to Martinique.

He visits the French, Dutch and English West Indies from Grenada to Hispaniola. In his stories, written in 1698, he evokes many aspects of Caribbean society, including colonial slavery. He is himself a staunch defender of slavery and has slaves. It describes the living conditions of Martinican slaves and their passion for dancing. He is also the privileged witness of another aspect of this society, the flibust, for which his writings are a source of great importance.

I got 4th place on DPC's Best of 2006 challenge with this one. That's great because there were over 700 entries. I'm thrilled¨:D

Short-Eared Owl (Asia flammeus). A welcome return of the Short-Eared Owls to Sandwich Bay in Kent for the winter.

I came across this sawn-down tree on a forest walk for my YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/user/YTrikkied/videos

There's hardly any room for humans on our sofa since Henry and Ray have taken a liking to the furry cover on our sofa. It has not always been love, peace and harmony between Henry and Ray or the other cats. Ray is not yet aware that Henry has snuggled up to him.

And the award for the best supporting act goes to........

37716 and 37422 outside York Thrall (Holgate) during the evening on Sat 16th December 2023.

These are 2 out of a total of 5 Class 37’s that were included in the line up, following the end of the locomotives use on the 2023 railhead treatment trains based at York. I feel a bit mean referring to these 2 as a mere supporting act. They were of course much more than that, although it's probably fair to say that the majority of attention went the way of the other 3.

The photo shoot was organised by the well respected Network Rail Director Chris Gee, and involved a huge amount of detailed preparation and organisation amongst both DRS and Network Rail, as well as numerous individuals. It was a great success and all of the proceeds raised (£3,000.00) will be donated to Martin House Hospice.

These are the montages and multiple exposures I'm most pleased with.

Left to right, top to bottom: Valentine's Day, 14 February; Paired, 28 March; Duet, 23 May; Bubbles, 20 June; Binary, 10 October; Food related, 21 November.

Say you drive a Chevy, say you drive a Ford

You say you drive around the town till you just get bored

Then you change your mind for something else to do

And your heart gets bored with your mind, and it changes you...

If I were voting this extremely good looking 1964 Mustang would take Best in Class. It was a sweet ride and great looking inside and out. The rust exterior gleamed in the sunshine and the cream interior and wooden steering wheel complimented the exterior. Well done!! This fine ride was seen at the 2022 Cars in the Park car show in Shawnee Mission Park in Shawnee Kansas.

The original Ford Mustang debuted on April 17, 1964, at the attractive price of $2,368. Dealers were inundated with requests for the sleekly-styled new vehicle. In Garland, Texas, 15 customers thronged to bid on the same Mustang. The winning bidder resorted to sleeping overnight in his new car so that it wouldn’t be sold out from under him before his check could clear.

Ford initially forecasted annual sales of about 100,000 units. On the first day alone, dealers took 22,000 Mustang orders. Shortly after its introduction, the fledgling vehicle’s success was official when it was featured on the racetrack as the pace car for the 1964 Indianapolis 500. During the Mustang’s first 12 months on the market, sales grew to an astounding 417,000. Within two years, sales had catapulted to one million.

When the Mustang was unveiled, the reaction was so positive that there was no doubt it was going to be a success,” recalls Joe Oros, chief designer of Ford’s original pony car – dubbed the 1964½, because it was launched at an unusual halfway point during the year. Gale Halderman, one of the designers on Oros' team, was blown away by the success even though the engineers, test drivers, and prototype builders all had told the design team that they could tell it was a special car.

Anzac Day, 25 April, is probably Australia's most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first campaign that led to major casualties for Australian and New Zealand forces during World War One and commemorates all the conflicts that followed.
