I have named him scar as he has an open wound on his neck and an older injury on his flank.
Although the neck wound looks nasty it doesn't seem to be impeding him unduly. While we watched him he caught numerous fish so he certainly is capable of hunting.

The Gannet is surely Bempton's signature bird. Looking every bit like something from prehistory. They are however a beautiful and elegant bird.
The northern gannet is the largest of the gannet family and native to the Atlantic Ocean.

Shot taken with the Sony 400 2.8 gmaster lens and 1.4 teleconverter. I seriously had to put some time in for this shot, sat on my ass for ten hours for two 30 second moments when it took pity one me and perched up. Was worth every minute.
My first visit for 2 years and what a joy to be back. The pupping season is later than normal so numbers were down today, but still there was plenty to see.
I was going to start with a cute overload shot but opted for this comical capture instead.
A great shot for a caption.

I've always thought razorbills to be a quite stunning bird. A beak perhaps not quite as dramatic as a puffins, but still exotic in it's own right, and striking black and white markings.
I was therefore surprised as often is the case, that they are actually brown rather than black.

A member of the rail family Rallidae and fond of swimming in open water even though unlike ducks coots do not have webbed feet. The distinctive white shield above the white beak earns it the title 'bald', hence the saying 'bald as a Coot'. These birds have been known to kill their own young if they have too many young to feed which is usually the youngest of the brood. Males are normally the more aggressive than the female, if an intruder enters their territory they will use their large feet and claws to chase them away using their spattering behaviour.
Taken today at Aller Moor in Somerset, UK.

it's always difficult to come up with something different, when you have photographed a bird many times. This pose however fitted the bill perfectly if you'll excuse the pun.

The UK's largest land mammal and is the fourth-largest deer species behind the Moose. The male stags large antlers makes this deer an icon of the Scottish Highlands.
