This photo was taken by a Kowa/SIX medium format film camera with a KOWA 1:3.5/55mm lens using Kodak Portra 800 film, the negative scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.
I found an unwelcome winter guest on the window sill in my apartment today but chose to shot some very basic macros before her eviction. I spent quite a lot of time trying to get a good ID on this yellowjacket and finally determined that the three black facial spots (not visible in this image) and the wide, black band on the thorax made this a western yellowjacket instead of an eastern yellowjacket. The spots between bands on the thorax are confirmation that this is a queen, for the males and the sterile female workers in a colony do not have these spots (bands only). Most of the colony would have died off long ago (early autumn) anyway, leaving this queen to overwinter in a protected place until spring when she begins building a new nest and laying the eggs she carries all winter. It's minus 9F (minus 23C) today and the window sill is rather chilly, so I felt a wee bit safer shooting images of this flying stinger. I've a healthy respect for snakes and spider, etc. and do not mind shooting images of either but anything aggressive like yellowjackets and wasps tend to give me chills... lol They are fascinating but from a distance!
I still have the OM 90mm f/3.5 macro Pro lens on my list to obtain but, until then, I satisfied myself with using my 12-40mm and focus stacking in-body, using a little Joby light and diffusor for lighting. (1-4-2025)
City Girl Sindy had a basic body and very straight blonde hair with bangs (that prefers to stand in all directions). The outfit came in a choice of yellow, jade or pink jacket with coordinating top, socks and shoes.
To be specific, like the Sindy nerd I am:
Left - Pink jacket, blue top, yellow socks and hot pink trainers.
Middle - Yellow jacket, pink top, blue socks and lemon yellow trainers. Not the usual deep yellow Sindy usually have.
Right - Jade jacket, yellow top, pink socks and green trainers.
They all had the same white trousers and pink earrings like the girl to the left. (They had different coloured earrings in the ad.)
One of the things I discovered that I really liked about my first experience photographing birds, and especially birds in flight, was reviewing photos of flocks of flying birds and finding interesting patterns or formations or "stories" within those random flocks. That is, sometimes really fun or amazing, even artistic groupings occurred when I would crop in on a few of the randomly arranged birds I had captured in the wider frame of the shot. In this case the original frame had nine snow geese in total, with eight of them more or less in a line and one flying just above that line. But when I cropped it in to just these four, it immediately reminded me of a military basic training drill, with a drill instructor (the top bird) squawking orders to the "marching" cadets. In the larger frame with more birds, the formation was not as tight and top bird's open bill was less noticeable because it was so much smaller. Not sure if the "basic training" metaphor works for everybody, but it sure did for me!
