A comparison of trash! On the left is the trash from our three day backpacking trip. It includes the remains of 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches and two dinners. Hygiene debris and some extra trash we picked up off the trail.
On the right-- our trash from one meal. Taco Bell and homemade ice cream sundaes. (The paper towels are from an Oops where I dropped my bowl on the floor).

Taken for Our Daily Challenge topic - 'Bags'
In this presentation I will talk about how traveling teaches us so many things and gives examples of the different things we can learn when traveling.
I will start with this picture. This is a picture of me in Amsterdam the before last day of my 1 year tour of Europe. This picture shows that backpacking teaches you so much. Carrying my entire home on my back for 1 year really changed me and taught me a lot. I learned self-discipline, I learned that I could be both physically and mentally strong, taught me to be independent, calm, I gained an enormous amount of patience and learned to appreciate the small things in life. I also learned about what I valued in life (such as traveling, family, ...) and what I wanted to do as a career (psychology). When I came back to Canada I was a whole knew person. I believe just the fact of being independent, taking risks and experiencing living uncomfortably (sleeping in odd places, carrying your home on your shoulders, not always eating, etc) was an enormous learning experience. And I would do it all again in a flash.

This has to be one of my favourite projects this year - a cute kindy bag for my boy using the Made By Rae toddler backpack pattern.
Recuerdo que cuando me estaba preparando para el viaje por Europa tenía dos opciones: llevarme 2 backpack (uno grande y uno pequeño) o llevarme el backpack pequeño y una maleta con rueditas. Después de analizar cada una de las opciones y discutirlo con mis amigos me decidí por llevarme los 2 backpack ya que aunque el backpack grande no es muy seguro y no puedo llevar cosas frágiles es más práctico y fácil cargar. Tuve que ingeniármelas para poder poner a salvo las 3 botellas de Tequila que llevaba. Varios de mis amigos me decían que estaba mal… y que nadie usa así las mochilas… pero la verdad me encontré mucha gente que las usa así… además que es más práctico que llevar una maleta de rueditas… y más cuando hay que subir y bajar escaleras en el metro. Creo y estoy seguro que fue la mejor opción. Ese día llegué a Madrid y al llegar pasé por un control en donde había 2 filas, una para solo personas europeas y otra donde estábamos los que no fuéramos de la comunidad europea. Ahí me sellaron mi pasaporte. Después me dirigí a recoger mi backpack, estaba algo nervioso porque no quería ni pensar que se hubiera quedado en México. Para tranquilidad mía después de unos 10 minutos la divisé. Después me dispuse a buscar mapas de la ciudad y alguno del sistema de metro. Realmente fue fácil ubicarme. Viendo el mapa del metro y de la ciudad ubiqué los lugares a los que quería ir. Sacando distancias y el tiempo que tenía para ir y regresar la opción fue ir a conocer el estadio del Real Madrid, digo el tema de este viaje es el futbol. El estar en el estadio fue una experiencia muy agradable y excitante ya que ahí se han jugado grandes partidos. Cuando empecé a tomar fotografías al estadio por estar buscando la distancia correcta y el mejor ángulo no me di cuenta a qué hora me paré a mitad de la calle!!! Por fortuna y por mi angel de la guarda no pasó ningún auto en ese momento. No estaría contando esto. Después de terminar el recorrido al estadio que me costó 9 euros me pasé un rato en la tienda oficial del Real Madrid. Ahí compré una bufanda. Jajaja!!! Al salir del estadio como llevaba las dos mochilas una en la espalda y otra al frente una chava se muere de la risa, me regreso y le digo que si se toma una fotografía conmigo (eso por reírse) jejejeje!!! No tuvo ningún problema y se la tomó. Como tenía que estar en el aeropuerto a las 18:30 me apuré para llegar a tiempo al aeropuerto. Al llegar al aeropuerto busqué el lugar de la aerolínea Spanair por la que iba a volar. Al entregar el número de reserva la señorita me dice “Este vuelo se canceló” quiero que se imaginen lo que sentí en ese momento… “Ya se pudrió TODO!!!!!” NOOOO!!! Ya no voy a llegar a tiempo a Barcelona y el teléfono de Hiram no lo tenía (se me olvidó apuntarlo bien!!) pero la señorita me dice que me iba a dar un boleto para volar por IBERIA a cualquier hora a partir de ese momento. Eso fue realmente mejor ya que es mejor aerolínea que por la que había pagado. Además tenía que ir a la Terminal 4 que es nueva y muy bonita. Para llegar ahí tuve que tomar un autobús gratis hacia esa Terminal ya que está retirada de donde estaba. Al llegar a la Terminal 4 empecé a buscar algún módulo de IBERIA. Al encontrarlo le pregunto a la señorita las salidas a Barcelona y me dice que el boleto que me dieron es del puente aéreo y que busque un puente rojo al final del pasillo. Al llegar al mostrador le doy a la señorita a cargo el pase que me dieron los de Spanair y me comenta que el próximo vuelo sale a las 19:45 lo cual era muy bueno ya que no iba a llegar después de lo esperado a Barcelona e iba a poder esperar a Hiram. Al llegar a Barcelona pude ver una vista aérea increíble de la ciudad, el puerto y el mar Mediterraneo. Al llegar al aeropuerto tuve que esperar a que llegara Hiram ya que él esperaba mi llegada a las 21:40 y yo llegué a las 20:55.

In the course of cleaning the attic, we discovered my father's backpack from his backpacking across Europe days.
It was covered in dirt, but I sprayed a little water on it, and it suddenly shined through, bright orange, more or less like new.
This is a pretty serious backpack - metal frame and everything.
