what a brilliant backpack. It's so good I want to wear it even though I'm not carrying anything!

No complaints. Only thanks. When the clouds cleared we were treated to views of Mount Olympus.

I have returned from another year of participating in Olympic National Park's Olympic marmot monitoring program. The program is in its fourth year. It is estimated only 2,000 Olympic marmots remain but the ONP's Wildlife Branch Chief estimates a more likely population number at 1,000. The Olympic marmot is endemic to the Olympic Peninsula - so these decreased numbers are of note and worth investigating.

This year's volunteer effort took myself, footsore311 and two friends to Dodger Point. None of us had been there prior. I was blown away by the beauty and fell in love with the charm and history of this special location. Dodger Point easily won a place in my heart. And though I'm still in pain from the 13.5 mile hike out - one thing is for sure: I hope to return to Dodger Point, again and again.

When I go to travel,I use this backpack.

This from is an experimental project I did with my illustration students at the university (UPB, Medellin). The idea was to see if we could customize Nike backpacks, what materials should be used and what results it could offer.

Nike donated the backpacks, and each student got to keep theirs after the project was done.

(The thing sticking out of the back pack is a another student project, from another class)

Keep in mind that I didn't actually make any of these, they're entirely the student's work.

This classic leather backpack is hand crafted from local cowhide that has been manufactured in a local tannery using the same methods and techniques that were used 100 years ago. The tool bag is crafted from 4,2 mm thick leather for extra hardness and durability. The bag has extra inner pockets - one for tablet, one for phone and extra one for keys or other small things. All components are custom dyed with Fiebings professional oil dye. Afterwards, the leather is treated with palm leaf wax and heated beeswax that gives it a vintage look. It is finished using acrylic leather sheen to protect against moisture. The bag is hand stitched using traditional two needle saddle stitch and a 3 cord, 1mm thick linen thread. It has antique finish high quality brass hardware.

The bag is made in cooperation with TREYDEN.

It's technically illegal to camp on the beach in New Zealand, unless in a designated spot. The morning I went to shoot the sunrise at Cathedral Cove this late summer/early autumn, there were some European backpackers doing just that though. The beach at Cathedral Cove is at least 100 meters long. And the only people on the beach were these two campers (who I think we woke up), my husband and I, and a random Asian guy wandering around in full rain and winter gear. When i set up my shot, this girl walked into the surf and stood there. JUST as the sun came up. Prime light time. I was max 20 meters from the rock quite obviously shooting it with my tripod etc. There were acres of beach behind me. And she would not move. So now she is in my shot. Forever. I wish she would have moved. But now, we can all wonder what she thought she was doing there in my shot.

New for 2013, the Brooks Pickwick canvas backpack. Seen here in 'Goosebeak'.

I recently put together a book for my dad that contained photographs of some of our many wilderness camps. I thought I would share some of those campviews and memories here.

What you can't really see in this picture is the elaborate chairs (and television, which we are pretending to watch) someone crafted out of rocks along the banks of the Elwha River. Elkhorn was our fourth - and final - night along the Olympic Traverse (Quinault to Elwha).

And speaking of mediocrity.

My new remote came the other day, and I have not taken the

85mm off my camera, which makes everything look bokehlicious.

So I couldn't resist this shot of the backpack of the girl whose

dog bit Serena.

New backpack for 2010.

I love photography and backpacking. Then my brother introduced me to endurocross. It was only a matter of time when all 3 would combine.

And here is my first backpacking (motorcycle packing?), photography, enduro trip at Limasawa Island!

Xander and Dimitri had to make a poster to show what they do to help the environment for school. These were our photos for the poster.

Kristin bought us 2 of these backpack beach chairs for going down to the Santa Monica beach. It's been a bit too chilly of late for that, BUT I've found that this chair is an excellent "unfold it 3 feet from the TV for an immersive Halo 3 video gaming romp" chair. Only $25 too. I highly recommend. www.target.com/Wearever-Hi-Back-Steel-Backpack-Chair/dp/B... chairs&page=1

Mountaineers Backpacking School graduation backpacking trip

I made a mini-quilt to cover the logo on this backpack.

Our first time staying at Mount Rainier National Park's Grand Park. Solo Kelty tents. External frame backpacks(!). I remember when we stopped at White River to obtain our permit we were required to watch a short film and prove we knew where we were going (and camping) by pointing out our destination on a map. It felt like a test. Thankfully, we passed.

Crumpler Belly backpack, size L, in orange/white. You can see how nicely contoured the straps are, and how the backpack will hug your body. Quite a few Crumpler emblems on this thing, eh? As long as it doesn't say "Belly" anywhere. ;-)
