I found this funky backpack at a flea market. It's very cool and in mint condition though it seems pretty old. I don't know when Bergans stopped making these.

On our second day of backpacking in the Tetons we had thunder, lightning, rain and hail at the higher elevations.
This is the view from our camp on the upper south fork of Cascade Canyon as the sunset broke through under the clouds.
It was good to have a place to camp and to be warm and dry.
My wife Leah on the Lake Country Loop, High Uintas Wilderness (Utah) with a light dusting of snow in October.

New backpack. I loaded up the minimum for an overnight trip and headed out for a long trial hike. I love the new pack.

I have a difficult time imagining my father the backpacking type, but then, this was a different time. A long time ago, back before he was married.
And he journeyed, apparently, to London, France, Switzerland, Italy, Holland, Tel Aviv and Vienna, among other places. I know that he also spent time in Germany and Sweden at some point, and lived on a kibbutz somewhere in Israel for a number of months.
I have tons of souveniers from all my trips, including these many photos you are looking at right now. Still, the idea of having patches from everywhere you've been, collecting one of the same type of thing from each place, just in different styles or colors, really appeals. Not that I'm going to do it. I'm not the backpacking type, either. And, like I said, that was a different time. Anyone who thinks that today is still that time is deluding themselves, in my opinion.
