Another ex-First Scania L94UB Wright Axcess Floline in the ConnexionsBuses fleet, S574 TPW came from Eastern Counties (66574) and is approaching York rail station running HCT service 21 - and displaying the rarely seen Askham Bar destination ("Askham Bar", "Park and Ride for York"). This has also been in the Northampton fleet... though the 'PW' registration suffix originates from South Wales, which means this bus does fit in with other vehicles which have been with Connexions in the past and have originated from Newport Transport. This particular bus is one of the lesser-papped members of the fleet, possibly because it normally runs on school duties in Harrogate.

Stretching its legs….

Good to see this veteran out stretching its legs earlier today. This is 578 (P578DMS) which has been restored to as delivered condition when it arrived at Midland Bluebird. It was then seconded to Lowland Omnibuses as part of the FifeFirst operation and was repainted allover Red. When that ended, they went back to Midland and was repainted into standard First livery.

If you look closely you’ll see green handrails and grey seats. This bus was delivered before First had figured out its interior spec.

Somewhat of a celebrity in the HCT fleet, Scania L113CRL Wright Axcess Ultralow N414 ENW is always a great sight to behold in service in in dreadful weather such as here today. A remarkable survivor, this bus was new in late 1995 to Rider York for Park and Ride duties as fleet number 8414 in a distinctive 2-tone blue livery (as had been used on M113SLS, a demonstrator which had been tried by Rider York and they obviously liked the livery so much they then adopted it) and was one member in the very first full batch of low floor buses for Yorkshire. Along with later additions as the P&R operation expanded, this stayed in York for 7 years until 2002 when the entire singe decker York fleet had been replaced by inferior Volvo B7L's and B6BLE's - this bus moved to Potteries for a while beofre settling in the Leeds fleet. A rear-end collision almost spelled the end for this, however the decision was made to rebuild and repair to keep it in use. Upon reentering service with Firstgroup, it had been given the new Olympia livery and at the time was the oldest bus in passenger service to gain the livery. Withdrawn in late summer 2014, it was feared this would make a one-way trip to Barnsley - but instead was saved by Craig Temple of ConnexionsBuses; initially bought for preservation, a full inspection revealled it's condition was simply too good for it to not see a bit more use in service. As of November 2016 the bus has been purchased for preservation by somebody with connections to Connexions, and who already part-owns a bus which is a regular across the Yorks & Lincs bus rally scene and so this will be going to a good home.

An agreement is in place that 8414 can see some light use here and there though as a reserve vehicle - and on November 22nd 2016 it saw use on the 13's linking York to Haxby and Copmanthorpe.... I had seen it go past me in Coppergate at 15.10 (a late-running 1500 from Stonebow), and as I was on the way somewhere else on other business I then decided afterward to wait around in New earswick by the shops knowing this would pick up the school run and so would be guaranteed to stop here thus ensuring a clear photo in the dreary weather.... half an hour after it was supposed to come though it did eventually show up, but not in service and so didn't stop therefore this was my best photo. It took 6 hours to get my coat dry once I got back home from standing out in the rain for so long.

New in autumn 1995 to Rider York as Yorkshire Rider 8414 in a batch of 14 vehicles for the relaunched York Park and Ride services, Scania L113 Wright Axcess Ultralow N414 ENW was given a distinctive 2-tone blue livery complete with large P&R vinyls and were also the only vehicles to carry the Rider York name with the mid 1990's 'perspective' style Rider logo. This batch were also the very first bulk order of low floor buses for Yorkshire as a whole, with YR going for the L113 having had two East Lancs examples in use in Leeds initially as a trial... 8414 left York in 2002 after being replaced by inferior Volvo B7L's, and buses of a similar quality to these did not emerge until the articulated Citaro's arrived in late 2008... As they were not required in York, the whole batch were dispersed far and wide across the Firstgroup UK fleet; now as 60133 it went to Potteries Motor Traction (PMT) for a while before ending up with First Leeds. It did get involved in a collision with another vehicle, but was rebuilt and then given Olympia livery - which at the time of it being repainted made it the oldest vehicle in the group to get the livery.

Now as the last surviving member of this first batch, 8414 has been purchased by ConnexionsBuses and in this video is reversing out of the HCT workshop with a brand new coat of paint into the Connexions livery and having had some mechanical checks and work done in preparation for this entering service on January 5th. There are still some odds and ends to finish off, but from what I could see it is looking well.

When this was withdrawn by First in late summer 2014 the worst was feared by most Yorkshire-based enthusiasts, however the boss of Connexions purchased it with the intention to preserve it; however on a full inspection, the bus was in such good condition that it was just too good to place in a semi-idle state of preservation just yet.

Back where it belongs, on the streets of York at the Stonebow is Scania L113CRL Wright Axcess Ultralow N414 ENW running HCT service 13 to Haxby (which among enthusiasts is affectionately referred to as York's Heritage Bus Route).

However, with the DDA deadline at the end of 2015 looming ever closer its days of use on public service are very much limited. Craig may yet decide to keep this on the books for another year but only on 'Closed Door' school services, but whatever decision is made 8414 will be going straight into preservation locally as soon as it is withdrawn.

I took two photos of this as it heads over Ouse Bridge (a bridge it would have crossed many times when new on Park and Ride services, bearing in mind back then the routes were slightly different to today) and I couldn't make up my mind between the two which I prefer and so both have been uploaded. I had stood up on the stone wall of the bridge simply due to how many people and other vehicles there were going past me as I waited it made me think I honestly wouldn't get anywhere near a half decent photo of this here - and yet the road cleared up rather nicely... even the pigeons have gathered behind to watch this pass by!
