In 1917, as World War I raged abroad, 26-year-old auto mechanic Edmund Otto Carl (1891-1970), a native Washingtonian, borrowed $900 from his dad to break out on his own. He set up an auto repair shop in an alley off of the 600 block of H Street NW and grossed $7,000 in his first year. He never looked back. After opening a large garage on H Street across from the alley in the 1920s, he added branches all over the city. Call Carl eventually had over 350 employees and 13 garages. After Ed Carl died, his wife Rae continued the business through the 1970s. Family members sold off the company's assets in the early 1980s, ending its long and successful run.

My daughter was kind enough to drive me over to this recently closed gas station near us. It was quite cold, so I left her in the car and walked over to set up my shot. I felt more comfortable out there than I have yet, but I definitely experience the weird thought process that lets me believe "If I can't see you, then you can't see me," which is good when I don't have my glasses on and/or when it is night. :)

I'm gonna try to set up a shot there during the day in the next week or so. Then I'll feel brave.

With his mask at his chin, this gent was yelling and seemed to be orchestrating comings and goings at this garage.

I took this photo outside of Bladenboro at the intersection of North Carolina Highway 211 and North Carolina Highway 131. Hester Tire's giant tire is something you can't miss when you drive by. Bladenboro is in Bladen County, North Carolina.

This scene says vintage to me. It is a glance into branding history. However, the signs and words on the garage doors seem to be at odds with one another. I mean, barbecue and air conditioning service?

Built in 1964, the gray, 47-foot-high, 110-foot-long brontosaurus has gone by many different names. First, it was a Sinclair Refining Co. gas station, built to represent the mascot of the refinery.
