2001 South State Street, Chicago

Sometimes things line up nicely. After coming off yet another venture to the Bloomington District, I found myself wandering over to Tolono just to see what was going on. D91 was working industry near CP Dawn, and some stuff was moving around on CN and NS alike, so I had a little look around. I initially thought to just sort of watch and wait, put down the camera and just see some things move. We, as photographers, end up watching trains move primarily through our camera viewfinders, or rearview mirrors as we speed away to the next spot for a photo. Sometimes it's good to take a step back and watch.

Yet, when I turned up at CP Dawn, there was no way I could put down my camera. The sunset was blossoming into a brilliant orange fireball, and with NS sending a westbound train my direction, it was shaping up to be a wonderful view. Timing really is the crux of it all.

NS 181, chock full of classic big 86ft autoparts boxcars and led by one of the new UP repaints, heads off into the sunset at CP Dawn on the NS Lafayette District. Many of these boxcars are reaching their 50 service life date, so many may not last all that much longer in operation. But then who knows? Either way, they're a cool sight for now, as is a classic sunset. A very nice way to end a very nice day out.

Wish I could have put some scale to this, but I was turning across a four lane road, saw it lying in the road, grabbed the camera and took two shots out the car window. I had the telephoto lens on, so was just happy it worked. Some tractor trailer (lorry) is missing a lug nut though. This thing was HUGE!! If it's still lying there when I go back, I'm gonna grab it, it could be a candle holder, lol. The crazy things I take photos of.....I'm as nuts as this nut.....

After the nice sun on Sunday, everything went to crap this holiday weekend with high clouds and scattered showers.

Built in 1977 by Greenville Steel Car Co, this big boxcar spent its heyday on some of the hottest trains run on the Southern Railway. It still finds itself hauling lightweight auto parts many years later, seen here on Detroit's south side. However, with the AAR's regulation restricting interchange of railcars over 50 years in age, there may only be a few more years left in the life of this 10,000 cubic foot behemoth.

Below the faded "Southern" lettering is one of the railroad's old slogan's: "Gives a Green Light to Innovations".

CSX train R376 was headed east on the Philadelphia Subdivision behind a pair of SD50s in 1994.

In the years since, the state of Maryland built an overpass for Riverside Drive right through this scene, CSX removed the classic B&O signals, autopart traffic is practically non-existent and the SD50 fleet is long retired.

Iconic American auto parts and service center was sold today (10/26/2015) to the Japanese tire company Bridgestone for $835 million and who knows how this 1921 established Philadelphia based company will end up, more than likely stores across the country will close and jobs will be lost as Bridgestone is really only interested in the service and tire end of the company - so we'll see this might be Manny, Moe & Jack's last ride

The Soo Line acquired five 86' high cube boxcars in 1970 that were originally operated by the Ann Arbor Railroad. They were a mixture of Greenville and Thrall-built cars. It appears that they were originally procured to participate in an auto parts pool hauling stamped metal parts. By 1980, these cars were no longer on the roster and presumably, were working for another road in similar service.
