A pair of Dash 9's lead an extremely late running 120 east at Bates. This train consisted of approximately 70 empty autoparts cars, with 2 cars of junk freight tacked onto the rear end for good measure.

A check of my notebook this day (Sunday, June 4, 1989) showed that I didn't shoot anything else earlier in the day. Maybe I had some family event going on, maybe I had too much fun on Saturday night and slept in (quite possible) or maybe I just didn't feel like doing anything else. But late in the afternoon I found myself up at the C&NW's bridge over Turtle Creek at Tiffany, WI. The Proviso-Janesville, WI "B-Train" was always along late in the afternoon to take boxcars of autoparts and empty autoracks toward the GM plant up there. A low rumble to the southeast, a flash of yellow through the trees and then C&NW 950, 892 and 6818 were over the Civil War-era limestone arch bridge.

Page is a city in Coconino County, Arizona, United States, near the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell. Unlike other cities in the area, Page was founded in 1957 as a housing community for workers and their families during the construction of nearby Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River. In 1997, Antelope Canyon was discovered on Navajo land adjacent to Page. This natural slot canyon, formed by erosion, has created a steady increase in tourism for Page, as word spread of the beauty of the canyon.
EMD's and CPL's: Railfanning on the old B&O doesn't get any better than this. An SD70MAC and an SD50 lead autorack/autoparts train Q243 thru the SE transfer track and onto the Toledo Subdivision at Deshler, Ohio.

For a decent amount of the chase, the highway pretty much paralleled the line, so the shots were a matter of where you were able to shoot him once you got back in front. This was the next spot, cresting this hill near Paris.

I saw this ICG relic when I shot 181 at Farley's Lane. Made it a point to get a good roster shot as 181 pulled into the Pass at Bates to meet 256.

My wife sent me out to get her a bowl of chiil from Steak & Shake just as #145 was passing thru Starne Interlocker on the east side of Springfield. This gave me just the right amount of time to get down to Cockrell Lane, nail a shot of the train in gorgeous late summer light, get the chilli, and then return back home with my wife none the wiser. Perfect timing indeed!

#255 lopes along at 45-50 MPH at Bates with a single AC GEVO and a long train of Roadrailers loaded with Ford autoparts. Given the flat terrain, this is as fast as this supposedly hot train will ever go on this trip.

Our first shot of the chase outside of Decatur was at Illiopolis. He does a healthy 60 MPH through most of the line, and I wouldn't be surprised if he was doing more when he passed us here.
Sam informed me afterward that the town had been the sight of an ecological disaster after a plant blew up, killing multiple people. Never would have guessed.

A pair of ex-Conrail locos lead #145 west at County Line Road. This section of the former Wabash KC line is about as flat as flat can get.
Built in 1977 by Greenville Steel Car Co, this big boxcar spent its heyday on some of the hottest trains run on the Southern Railway. It still finds itself hauling lightweight auto parts many years later, seen here on Detroit's south side. However, with the AAR's regulation restricting interchange of railcars over 50 years in age, there may only be a few more years left in the life of this 10,000 cubic foot behemoth.
Below the faded "Southern" lettering is one of the railroad's old slogan's: "Gives a Green Light to Innovations".

Just as I was taking this photo, NS' Wayside desk alerted 181 to a block of five cars deep in their train with wheels that were "trending hot" when the train passed the Riverton hotbox detector. This type of situation has taken on new significance after the train derailment and fire in East Palestine, OH. Turns out it was just a simple case of sticking brakes that was resolved by a short stop and release of the air brakes at Hazel Dell.
