I did a double-take upon 1st seeing this Watusi cattle steer ( a 3 year old named 'Porcupine ' ) at a farm in Celo, N.C. The owner said the huge horns are relatively light ...& filled with blood vessels that help the animal release body heat in its African homeland... in the same way that elephants use their oversized ears to help regulate their temperature .
The link below is to a short video that shows another steer of this type that had the biggest horns of all

These two Female Common Mergansers were looking in opposite directions. Maybe they were two sisters that did not along, only they will know for sure. The British call this bird the "Goosander." The female Common Merganser has a solid gray body with a reddish-brown head. She has a narrow, red, serrate bill and white chin-patch at the base of the lower mandible. The short crest of the female is often not obvious.

REVISITED.
One picture is worth a thousand words as the saying goes. I have always been fascinated and intrigued by these small birds, the sparrows. Their agility, very fast flapping of the wings, their untamed timidity have always attracted me. They challenge my photography skills. Moreover through each shot they teach me something about their social life.

I met this friendly little cat on a bridge at a local park . The kitty was giving me a very nice pose for a picture.....looking at the camera & 'smiling' ..but at the last second it heard the loud footsteps of some joggers who were running under the bridge ...& she had to look down to investigate :-) Oh well ....I can't blame a cat for being curious ...curiosity is deeply embedded in their DNA :-)))))))))))

Contest -- Animals Behind Fences (NO BIRDS)
It never ceases to amaze us when one of these large birds takes to the air with effortless grace. As large as they are they seem weightless once airborne. The American White Pelican is one of the largest North American birds, they are majestic in the air. The birds soar with incredible steadiness on broad, white-and-black wings. Their large heads and huge, heavy bills give them a prehistoric look.
Early winter on a late pewter light afternoon...the aged maples are spreading their skeletal branches once again. I have revisited this farm lane many times this past year only to discover new nuances of beauty and a lasting serenity like none other. The terrain is high here and the wind sweeps across the farmland with a pulsating rhythm and audible breathe. Birds scurry and abandon themselves to flight while the crisp air clings to the lungs and sheds aromas of seasonal earthiness. Ashfield, MA
