Designed in 1906 by Vieillard & Touzet, a Lisbon-based architectural engineering firm started by two French engineers, Charles Vieillard and Fernand Touzet. The building, conceived from the start as a venue for showcasing automobiles is notable for its art nouveau style and for its use of glass and iron (Touzet was a disciple of Gustave Eiffel). The art nouveau azulejo panel is by Jorge Pinto (1875-1945).
