Running about 12 hours late, Northbound P052 soars over the classic concrete arch bridge above the James River on a sweltering May evening. Normally, 52 would cross this bright near the crack of dawn on its way to Lorton. However, a series of schedule lapses have placed this set a full half-day off the normally scheduled time slot. They would have to annul both trains a few days later to allow the schedule to get back to normal. That aside, we welcomed the opportunity to get a rare perspective of the Auto Train running this late in the day as it skirts the outer fringes of the city of Richmond.

An odd southbound autorack train has been making an occasional appearance on the Abbeville Subdivision. This one is Q215-28, seen passing through Elberton, GA. The usual rack trains are 210/211, so this additional traffic is welcomed.

Amtrak’s Auto Train heads over Neabsco Creek Bridge near Woodbridge, Virginia, on April 23, 1996. The train is powered by a pair of GE P40DC (Nos. 831 and 833) locomotives.

A solo ex-GM&O GP38-2 leads a train of Ford frames and 86-footers through the famous DT&I "arches", a remnant of Henry Ford's electrification project in the 1920s, on its way to the sprawling Rouge Complex in Dearborn.

The Auto Train has arrived at its southern terminus in Sanford, FL. Now it is time for the switching job to unload the autoracks.

After the passengers got off the train, the autoracks would be left for 511 to pick up and sort. The auto facility is just off the frame to the left, and these guys would work very fast. Seeing this operation was very interesting, as out west there is nothing like it, and in general this operation is one of a kind.

This is a photo of the reflection of green foliage on the auto body detailing of a car.

A familiar scene! Adding to my album of photos with a Tomioka Auto-Revuenon 55mm f1.2, stopped down.

This appears to be a train engine, but it's actually a truck disguised as one. Seen at the Volo Museum in Volo Illinois.

Here is a night shot of Tacoma, WA's downtown area, including the LeMay Auto Museum. The headlight streaks across the bottom are from I-5. Talk about a million ways to make this composition..... I finally settled on this version anyway and called it a night.....:) Thank you for your kind visits and wishing everyone a Very Happy New Year in 2015!!!

From the "we didn't know how good we had it" files...a former Conrail SD60M in fresh YN2 paint leads a solid set of then-new Kansas City Southern Auto-Max auto racks at CP 7 in Bogota, NJ on the River Sub. The uniform cars and clean power give the appearance of a publicity photo, but it was basically a case of dumb luck for me. The Gunderson Auto-Max cars were built starting in 1999 and if I recall correctly the started showing up on the River Line around the time of this photo. I believe they were unloaded at Ridgefield Heights Auto Terminal, as their 20'2" height restricted their use further south. The new third track between CP 7 and CP 10 was in place but not yet in use at the time of this photo. While it was sad to see Conrail blue disappear, I have to admit these SD60Ms did look good in a coat of clean YN2 paint!
