New Orleans is, above all, a city of water -- it was a constant, everywhere -- the air (even in March, when it thankfully wasn't too hot) sultry with humidity, merchants hosing down the sidewalks on front of their shops every morning, intermittant rain, and the big river winding through. I loved the lush plant life growing in the track of a storm drain on this auto repair shop...
pardon the repetition from earlier images, but I am finding myself angrier and angrier the more I see of this disaster unfolding -- best expressed in a discussion on one of colorstalker's photos...

and the first chapter of John McPhee's book The Control of Nature (1989), which documents the intricate and sometimes-bizarre ways engineering projects have attempted to keep the water out of New Orleans, arrogantly presuming that complete control over this natural force could be achieved and maintained, & why failure was inevitable at some point...
