for Autism Awareness.

I am amazed that the cost of autism over the lifespan is 3.2 million dollars per person. Of that 3.2 million dollars, sixty percent is in adult services.

Autism Awareness is highlighted in April as the National Autism Awareness Month. There are several events that are held to raise money for Autism Speaks.

Working in colleges was great, since many of the young people felt that they had found a place where they could be themselves and pursue their dreams.

The artist who made this image expressed a lot of emotions around feeling bullied in mainstream schools, which only stopped when she came to college. Like so many of the participants, she feels that not many people understand autism and that that is what needs to change.

Today I got my autism training business started with this training session. The reason the room is dissaranged is that at the start of the training I create the sensory experience and difficulty making sense of these experiences that autistic people do; so I set the room up in a way people would find incomprehensible. Then they would have to begin making sense of a fractured view of what was happening. to further the overload and incomprehension I just began running a bicycle maintenance workshop and expected them to know what I was on about.

From all this I drew the first lesson about the world of autistic people and our fractured view of situations adn the amount of calculating and comprehending we have to do most of the time, just to make sense of thngs.

Today I was training student nurses.

The artist who made this image described their picture in the following way.

“My idea is I wanted to keep it all simple, because my version of autism is to keep it simple. When someone says something, I don’t always understand it the first time, I have to ask them to keep it simple and explain it. That way I can get a better understanding.”

From learning new routines, to knowing when it’s time to use the toilet, to being able to manipulate clothing, the potty training process can take many years for some children with autism to become experts. Keep in mind that children with autism are all very different and master skills at different times.
