Research over time has made numerous suggestions that emotions are connected to our thinking and cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and reasoning. People with a learning disability and/or autism spectrum conditions are often described as having difficulties in what we call ‘cognitive function’, that is, the intellectual process by which we think, reason, understand ideas and remember things.

Our son is on the high functioning end of the autism spectrum and is a wonderful, beautiful and loving young man. Fortunately we caught his condition very early and have all worked very hard to grow him into what he is today and what he is becoming - early intervention is one of the most important things that you can do for a child. At times autism can be isolating because the condition is not well understood and, quite frankly, the behaviors can be off putting. There are also issues, in our son's case, around lack of socialization and communication skills. That is the story told by this photo. The good news for Joel is that he has made tremendous strides and is the best little buddy a dad could have. His socialization and communication skills have improved tremendously and every day we are glad that we did not deny his condition and got him the early intervention that has made such a difference in his life.
