I had a piece published in The Psychologist magazine, about how I think autistic minds work, and after spending a while looking at satellite photos of gorges and deltas, I ended up using two of my own photos of trees.

Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person's ability to communicate and interact with others. According to the Autism Speaks website, it is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PPD). The other pervasive developmental disorders are PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder- Not Otherwise Specified), Asperger Syndrome, Rett Syndrome and Childfood Disintegrative Disorder. These are refered to by parents and professionals as Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Translated: "My name is Immanuel. I'm autistic. Sometimes I can't talk. Sometimes I have seizures. I might shake, tremble and make noises. It's not dangerous. I need to rest at a dark and cool place. I need to be left alone."

All of my children have degrees of autism each affected in their own way. They all love each other deeply and most of the time compensate nicely but expressing their love at times can become overwhelming difficult and this photograph captures one of these moments poignantly.
